s/o Abortion...SD Measure 11

Feministing has an excellent video up about South Dakota's proposed abortion ban. If you can't watch video right now, it also has text of the story of a woman who aborted one of her twins to save the other. (I thought we had discussed this before, but I can't remember.) Under Measure 11, she wouldn't have been able to make that choice. I really hope this thing doesn't pass.

  • Of course it will pass. It's South Dakota.

Didn't SD veto an abortion ban recently? ...

Found it: In 2006, South Dakota voters rejected, 56% to 44%, a similar ballot initiative that would have banned all abortions

  • How is this ban constitutional??

Thank Jebus for privacy at the polls.  I think a lot of people will publicly fret over abortion, but deep down they are somewhat comforted by having the choice should the worst occur (ie. rape, for themselves or their wife or child).

  • The point is that it's not constitutional.  They want someone to sue, and they want  it to go the Supreme Court, and they expect the Supreme Court to uphold it thereby overturning Roe. v. Wade.
  • Here is a very short explanation of the history of the SD abortion bans and their strategy to overturn Roe.
  • Isn't this the exact same thing that was on the ballot two years ago and voted down? ?Or did they loosen it up in hopes of it passing this time? ?If they haven't changed it, I don't foresee it passing. ?It failed rather badly last time out.
