Can anyone recommend any resources or books, or have any tips from personal experience, about growing an avocado tree? DH has wanted one for a long time and I'm thinking about getting one for him for his upcoming birthday.
If it helps, we live in CA and have a nice big yard!
Thanks!
Re: Growing an avocado tree?
If you want it to produce avocados, buy one from a reputable nursery, preferably one that offers a guarantee, and buy a grafted tree. Avocado trees grown from seed take many years to produce fruit, vs. just a couple of years for a grafted tree.
They grow FAST, like lots of sun, and have greedy roots. It is also normal to see a few inches of roots coming off the main stem and going down into the ground- this seems to be more pronounced in the first few years.
