Words of advice

For surviving college?

This girl who I have known since she was 6 is graduating high school today and we're going to her graduation party tomorrow. I used to babysit her and her younger brother and she was in our wedding.  Her mum told me the other day that she looks up to me as her role model, which is so touching! Anyway, I made her a college survival kit as her graduation gift and I want to also type up something with some advice about surviving college on it. What do you wish someone would have told you?

Re: Words of advice

  • How much note taking was involved. I didn't take a lot of notes in HS so I was a little thrown off in college when sometimes I felt like my hand was about to break off.

To take some time for yourself. I felt like when I was not in school that I needed to work all the time and I wish that sometimes that I would have just taken a day here and there when I didn't have class to just do something for myself (like go to the park for a few hours, read a non-school book, etc). Sometimes school gets stressful and you don't take time for yourself but sometimes you need that

  • Don't take early morning classes in your freshman/soph years - you will never go to them!

Don't get stressed out if you don't know your major/decide to change your major. I changed my major twice and my life is just fine.

The freshman 15 is very real - eat right and try to exercise.

Enjoy having little responsibility, because it goes by very quickly. I wish I just had to go to classes now!

Buy as many books used as possible, and sell them back at the end of the semester. If you think you will keep them and refer to them later, you are fooling yourself. Save yourself the cash now!

  • while you are there for education make sure to become friends with lots of different people and enjoy the carefree days of just hanging out and doing nothing...really that is the only time in your life you have to be immature

make sure to throw in some classes that might pertain to your major but something you enjoy like i took some art classes and photography classes

try to get involved in a club or organization you will meet lots of different people and many will be your friends for life

i agree take lots and lots of notes and try to study the notes as you go cause you can feel overwhelmed when it comes time for the test

and dont beat yourself up too much when you make mistakes it is all part of it!

man i honesly think i would relive  my college days if i could!
