Shopping Question

(This is in regards to clothing/shoes/purses/accessories)

How often do you go shopping?

On a normal basis, do you go out shopping looking for a particular thing, or are you out looking for (dishsoap at target, a card at the mall, a gift for your bff), and happen to browse the clothing section, and find something you like?

When you find something you like, do you purchase it right away, or do you think about what you have in your closet that you could match with it?

How often do you return items?

I'm just trying to see different opinions on the thought process of shopping.

Re: Shopping Question

  • I don't shop much. If I need new shoes or a new suit, I go to specific stores (DSW, Ann Taylor). I seldom just go, though, unless there is a good sale going on or, like I said, I need something. UNLESS my mom is in town. My mom likes to come visit every few weeks an go shopping. Most of the time I just watch her shop though.

I buy things right away without thinking about what they'll go with unless it's something like shoes in a fun color. Those I think about. My closet is very much staples and neutrals, though, so it's not much of a concern for me.

I rarely return things unless they don't fit.

We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • I don't think there's a method to my shopping madness. I shop impulsively for the most part. I buy way too many dresses. Sometimes I think "I need this kind of necklace or this kind of bag" and I'll scout stuff out until I find the right one.

I buy my clothing items in little pieces -- no major hauls.

I only return items that I buy online and don't fit.

  • The reason for me asking this question, is to try to change my own shopping habbits.

Sometimes I just get the urge to shop, and blow anywhere from $50 to $300 which is killing my CC's. (It's bad enough I put it on a CC, lol).

I don't currently NEED any clothes, shoes or purses.  I can make due with what I have.  I have all sorts of clothing items hanging in my closet with tags still on them Tongue Tied I just buy to buy.  Maybe it's just my little escape!

I'll usually go out looking for something, and then purchase that, and talk myself into getting other things "Well, this shirt would really do that skirt in my closet justice, and that skirt doesn't go with much, so I'll get the shirt"...and then NEVER WEAR IT!!!  I think at times I try to be on the trendy side, or dress a little more nicer (Casual work enviroment), but then I'm just like, eh...jeans and a t are fine!

I'm too lazy to return stuff, to much work. lol.

  • I feel you. I need to change my habits too. I currently have about 80 dresses in my closet - it's sick, but I just keep buying. I purge out my clothes about 3x a year - giving them away to friends and the rest to Goodwill. Stuff that's only been worn once or twice. I now ask myself, "Do you really need this? Is this not like your other pieces? How well does it fit? Durability?"  And if it's not a sale item, take your time, walk away from it. If it keeps coming back to your head, then in my world, that's a sign it was "meant to be."

  • I only really shop a few times a year. I always seem to be on a $$ crunch that doesn't give me much of a clothing budget.

When I do shop, I usually start out looking for something specific, like say I need a new cardigan. But I since I buy online a lot, I like to bunch several things together. I seem to have more success when i buy online in big hauls, because that way I can craft complete outfits. Otherwise, I suck at making things work together with stuff I have at home. And there's always an extra incentive to buy enough to get free shipping :)

I usually stop and think about it for a while before purchasing. If I make impulse buys in a regular store, I often change my mind about the style, or feel guilty later for spending the $$ and and take it back. Online purchases I only return if they don't fit.

  • Both of your original reasons apply to me.  I go shopping for a specific thing... could be a dress for a wedding, etc. I often come home with more than just the dress I "needed".  I also have a bad habit of going shopping to find a gift for someone else and picking up something for me along the way... not always clothes/shoes - a new cookbook, something for the house, etc. happen frequently.  I also randomly wander through Target's clothing/shoe section most everytime I go in and randomly buy things -- I rationalize because its so cheap and then I end up spending $100 when I came for something that should have cost me under $20.  When I get bored, I online shop too - although most of the time, I dont actually buy anything.

When I started writing this I was thinking that I didn't shop all that much... Huh?

As for returns -- I hate fitting rooms, so I buy stuff a lot (unless its something like a dress where I have 10 of them to try on) and take it home, try it on with whatever I would wear it with.  If I dont like it, then I return it.  I also tend to buy things that might work for an occasion - like my sister's wedding, I bought 3 different pairs of silver/gray shoes saying I would only keep 1.  I justified keeping a 2nd pair (they were more casual) and returned the 3rd.

  • I shop a lot, but rarely buy.

It's more that I'll go try stuff on, see what's in the stores, and price out merchandise.  But I only buy stuff if it fit perfectly (if you don't feel great in it, you won't wear it) and the price is right.  When I was working summer jobs, I would convert prices into my hourly wage and decide if an item was worth 7, 8, or 9 hours of work--I still am very aware of the value of my money.

I never have luck when I set a goal (like find a dress to wear this weekend Saturday), so instead I buy stuff when I find it and wait for the occassion to come.  And if I change my mind, I always return the item--an unwanted item is money burning in your closet.

  • I probably buy clothes once a month.  This month I have bought two tank tops.  Last month it was a couple of dresses.  Sometimes I wish I could go shopping as a hobby, but I'd rather have a less full closet full of things I love than a stuffed closet just to be stuffed.  I've gotten much more careful about quality as I get older.  I do end up wearing everything I buy these days, unless it doesn't fit well and then I give it away.

    1) I go shopping a lot. Like at least twice a week probably.

    2) I usually go with something specific in mind, but I always find something no matter what I'm looking for.

    3) I try to think of at least 3 different ways I could wear it before purchasing it.

    4) I also return a. lot. I think it's a byproduct of shopping so much, an inevitability. Plus, I usually don't try on clothes, it's too much work to maneuver a huge double stroller into the space of a small closet and then occupy the kids in the dressing room. I usually just buy it and see if it works at home.

I'm just trying to see different opinions on the thought process of shopping.
