Has anyone planted alstroemeria? Can you share how (seed/plant/store bought)? I love these and pick them up at the market all the time but was told that this type of flower is patented so it's only available to flower producers? Is this bull or is this true? I would love to plant some for myself but haven't been able to locate any that aren't already cut.
Also, very stupid question, but I have to ask: I see these flowers at markets selling as "garden bunch" so I've never been able to identify them. At the market, they're about 3 ft tall, look something like snapdragons (in terms of flower clustering) and I believe they're usually mixed into "hawaiian" type bouquets. Any clue? Sorry, I'll take a picture next time I see them at the market but thought I throw that question out there for now.
Re: Alstroemeria and other flowers
I've never grown Alstroemeria, but if you google "growing alstroemeria" you'll be overwhelmed with information about how to do it & where to buy seeds. Many varieties of hybridized plants are patented to the original propagator or discoverer and it is illegal to propagate those. That doesn't mean the entire genus is off limits, it's usually just a few specific new hybrid introductions.
Maybe the snapdragon-looking Hawaiian thingy is a type of ginger? They're popular in tropical bouquets & have many varieties.
I saw alstroemeria at Home Depot this weekend. I was a little surprised by the greenery that accompanies the blooms and almost didn't recognize it.
For your other question, maybe it's "stock" ? It looks similar to snapdragons, but I don't know if it would be that tall.
Long shot....but, maybe gladiolas?
Yes! That's it! Thanks!
