Moving to NC

My husband and I are thinking about moving to North Carolina from Long Island for a multiple amount of reasons.  The main reason, of course, is the cost of living.  I am looking for a job as a school counselor, and my husband, anything in the business field (prefer something with fraud; he is currently a fraud manager for a credit card company in New York).

Basically, I am writing because I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on good areas.  Preferably one with a young, up and coming neighborhood, and family friendly.  (We also enjoy the beach and water, so we would like to be close.)

My husband thinks it would be easier for him to get a job than me, so he has put all the pressure on me to find something first.

 Any positive input is appreciated!!

Re: Moving to NC

  • Hello and welcome! I moved to NC about 2 years ago and it was the best decision I ever made- DH and I love living here. I also work at a school here too. I live in the triangle area and there are plenty of family friendly cities here, as well as some great schools, but I don't know anything about areas by the beaches. I'll leave that to someone w/ a little more NC knowledge. Good luck with your job search and move!

  • I would probably start with the larger areas: Charlotte, the Triangle (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill), the Triad (Greensboro, Winston Salem, High Point) and Wilmington since you like the coast.

    Good luck in your search.

  • Hi! Congrats on the move! My husband and I moved to Charlotte from Atlanta about 3 years ago. We love it! The school systems are having some trouble right now... but I would still check it out. Uptown is super clean and there's always something going on. We're about 3 1/2 hours from Charleston, which is where my husband and I like to spend a lot of our time in the summer. We love the beach too!

Good luck with the job search and the move! I think you'll really like NC! We do! :)

  • Everyone's suggestions are great.  I grew up in Raleigh/the Triangle area, went to college in Greensboro (Triad), and live in Charlotte currently.  All three areas are nice.  They're a mix of suburbs with smaller towns around the outside (very, very family friendly).  Parts of the Raleigh and Charlotte area in particular are growing with new neighborhoods, new schools, etc. right now.  Raleigh is only 2-3 hours from the nearest beach, while Greensboro and Charlotte are both further west.

I live in south Charlotte/Matthews and really enjoy it, been here almost 2 years. I am a teacher in Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system.  While I love my job, I can tell you first hand that the Charlotte area schools are struggling at the moment...If you come to the Charlotte area, I would highly suggest applying for jobs in other counties around Mecklenburg (such as Union & Cabarrus counties).  You can work and even live outside Charlotte but still be close enough to the shopping, uptown life, etc.

I know little about Wilmington other than what I've seen while vacationing there a few times!  I've heard good things though and it's very pretty.

Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions for a native!

  • Hi there!  Dh and I moved down to the Triad area about 5 years ago from Long Island.  All of the areas the other ladies have suggested are ones that I too would suggest.  I too, know little about Wilmington, except that it's on the beach (think Long Beach as a reference--it has its business areas and its beach area--that was my impression of it anyway.)

The important thing in this still struggling economy is to try and find work (or at least have some really solid, good leads) BEFORE you guys move down here.  Many people have moved down here simply because its cheaper and they're all finding it incredibly difficult to find jobs because everyone is well qualified but there are still only few jobs available.  Good luck and let me know if there's anything else you'd want to know or compare things to the Island!

  • I've lived in Wilmington 8 years if you have any questions about this area.  One thing to note:  the job market was terrible here even BEFORE the general bad economy so it's very important to secure a job before moving here.  That being said, I love this area and even though it can be more expensive there are plenty of affordable parts of Wilmington if you don't have to live on or really close to the water.
