Q: Bike shopping

(feel wierd following up the last thread wit this...)

I tried posting this on health and fitness and got too technical an answer.  Plus, I was curious on the Canadian perspective.  Largely, because I'm not sure where to shop...

Hello - looking to buy a new bike for my upcoming birthday.  The main purpose of the bike would be to bike to work a couple days a week for the summer (less than 5km each way).  I'd also maybe take the odd ride within the city or wine country (i.e. pretty much all riding would be on road or paved bike paths). Given all this, I do not think I need anything extravagant, but I'm looking for advice on type of bike, features to look for, etc.

So, where would you suggest I shop?  (planned shopping trip includes Canadian Tire, SportCheck, MEC)  I'm thinking a hybrid would be the right type?  I really don't want to spend alot as I'm not sure how much I'll use it in the long term (i.e. $200-300?)  Any other advice?

Thanks!

Re: Q: Bike shopping

  • I recommend going to a smaller bike shop in the area just to check it out and what is out there for your needs.  I have a Scott Contessa 400 mountain bike. It was about $600ish I think.  I really like it and it is definitely worth it.  I am not an extreme biker or anything just like to ride, in fact, I haven't rode it yet this year if that tells you anything. I got it at the bike shop in the town I used to live in.  All the bikes there aren't super expensive though they are there and if in the end you decide not to go there (and it is a good shop) you will know what bike to to buy.

  • I would find out more about what you are looking for and then look on craigslist and kijiji.  My brother lives in Toronto and as a hobby he buys used bikes in the places like Burlington, London, and Hamilton, cleans them up a bit (soap and water, sometimes gets the tires changed at a shop or something) and resells them in Toronto.  He usually buys a bike for $20-$60, does about $30 of work on it and resells it for anywhere between $200 to $350.  He says the bikes he sells are a couple years old and previously retailed for at least twice as much as what he sells them for.

All this to say- you can get a good bike for really cheap if you know what to look for!
