Name change vent

Literally every d@mn day, I come home to find a minimum of two things that have been messed up. Today I retrieved the mail to find that two completely different companies (car insurance and student loans) decided that my middle initial should be "L" instead of "A." Mind you, now, I am a librarian and I send in truly exquisite paperwork with everything very clearly delineated. I get that some women elect to retain their middle initials, but some change theirs, and I don't understand why the office workers of America have taken it upon themselves to decide for me what my name should be when I have very plainly indicated my own preferences on the matter.

My health insurance company somehow took me OFF of my policy but put Matt on! I didn't even know that you could have a dependent on a policy without the "primary policyholder" being on it! They got the middle initial wrong, too. I think we have that all straightened out, finally. Of course, I'm still waiting on my health insurance cards from Matt's company. I have this sick feeling that I'm not really insured, at all.

My banks are all being complete pains in the butt. If I can ever access my money again, I am thinking about hollowing out a hole in the mattress and saying to heck with it.

I'm starting to think that those girls who keep their own names are on to something.

Re: Name change vent

  • Jeeeze! That's nuts.

Today I was telling my dad all the crap I have to do to change my name and he said the same thing "No wonder more people are keeping their names the same these days!"

  • I haven't had too much trouble with changing my name... I still have to change my credit cards and my student loans, but everything else has been relatively easy *shrugs*
  • I also have not had too much trouble changing my name. I was told that I don't have to change my name on my loans for school because they go by your ss #, some of the credit cards I haven't changed yet and the same with some of my student loans. I will slowly get there.

We did have a issue with my HH getting kicked off my policy. :( That was very frustrating.

  • Im plugging along as well. Credit cards were easy. they were just a phone call.

car loan and mortgage i faxed a copy of our marriage license with a letter asking them to change my name.

DL- I just did the other night along with registration and title.

Next week- I'm hitting up SS office, this will probably be the pain, theres only one office for our whole county and its in a bad neighborhood.

Student Loans and Banks are the last thing.  The bank told me to do them last they need my new DL, SS card and everything. They will be a pain for sure!

  • Well, if it makes you feel any better, I'm still waiting for proof from HI that will ALLOW me to change my name.

    Sigh.

  • They'd probably do crap like that regardless. My mother, who has been married for 29 years, still gets mail with the wrong initial. She chose to keep her middle name (I don't know why though...She hates her middle name.) and she gets mail all the time with her initial from her maiden name instead of her middle name.

I've got most of that stuff taken care of with no issues. It's just my school that's being a pain in the butt. Most schools only require your marriage license to change your name. Not mine... You have to have your actual social security card. (The letter they give you that says you changed your name with them in addition to the drivers license with my name is not acceptable proof that your name has been legally changed. They need your actual social security card.) So my name with the school is still my old one. And the school is all confused now, because I completed my FAFSA for the 2010-11 school year after I changed my name but before I found out that my school is stupid, so the school is convinced I haven't filed my FAFSA even though the ssn on my FAFSA matches the ssn the school has on file for me. It's so ridiculous!!!

  • Yep...I'm very glad I'm not changing mine.

Sorry to hear you're having so many problems.  It sounds like a total pain in the butt!  I hope things get straightened out soon.

  • I'm a librarian, too!  (I work in an corporate engineering library in the Aerospace Industry)

Sorry to hear it's been such a PITA...I haven't run into too many SNAFUs with my name change process except that since my email changed at work to reflect my new last name, it's like starting all over again with security priviledges here and right now I can't send or receieve email external to my company. Which is a problem b/c I have to contact vendors and people outside of the company....yeah. I called CSC this morning and they're like, "Let me give you a ticket number" which really means "Sit back and wait."

  • I'm really sorry you're having so much trouble changing your name on everything. I didn't have any trouble at all. I've got everything changed except one credit card.
