New to Gardening - Pest Problem

Hello.  I just planted a garden for the first time this year. I am having problems with pests.

I think birds want to eat my tomatoes.

And then the insect attacking the leaves of other things.

What is an organic way to help fight these critters?

  • It's probably squirrels in your tomatoes.  When it's hot, they take a bite for its water content.  You can use plastic clamshell containers to enclose your tomatoes, though.  I've got instructions & pictures in my blog (post = squirrel-proof tomatoes)

In order to identify the pest eating the leaves, we're going to need a close up, clear photo of the damage.  Once you know what you're dealing with, it's easier to come up with an effective (and organic) remedy.  Otherwise, you may be killing beneficial inspects along with the bad...

There are no squirrels in my neighborhood.  I know because my dog likes to hunt them and we go to other neighborhoods to find them.  I have been seeing birds flying out of it earth boxes though and suspect it is them.

    Do birds like tomatoes?

  • I have some seriously devious robins & I've never seen them take a tomato.  And, I didn't think I had chipmunks but then I saw one in my strawberry bed & suddenly a bunch of the damage from the past 2 years made sense.  In short, I wouldn't rule out squirrels just b/c you don't see them.

But, anyway, if you don't believe it's squirrels & believe it's birds my remedy will still work.  Plus, you're reusing something that can't be recycled, so that's a plus.  Last year I posted on my local Freecycle for clamshell containers (the containers strawberries, grape tomatoes, etc. come in) & got bunches.

  • You can purchase netting to wrap around your tomatoes if birds are attacking your tomatoes.  I bought some a few years ago and I wrap my squash and strawberries and birds can't get to the fruit.  As for insects that are eating the leaves of any of your vegetables, I use homemade insecticidal soap which mostly consists of a few drops of liquid soap and water.  You can add chili oil or garlic as well.

    Good luck!

  • Yes, birds can attack your tomatoes.  They also do it for the water inside.  I just started tomatoes this year but my friend already warned me about bird issues.  He knows for a fact birds were attacking his tomatoes b/c they would poop before they left!!
