Herbs? How to take care of them??
I have planted basil, cilantro, chives, rosemary, and parsley in some pots. What is the best way to take care of them so I can use them all summer long. I feel like my cilantro is not going to make it.
I need advise on when to harvest, how to harvest, and if I need to prune and basically anything else you think I might need to know.
thanks!
Re: Herbs? How to take care of them??
Mostly, you just need to make sure they are getting adequate water, especially if they are in pots. This may mean in the hottest summer months watering 2x/day (especially the basil & parsely. Rosemary is more drought tolerant)
Here's a post on harvesting basil: http://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/38143220.aspx
The rest don't have as specific harvesting instructions. It is best if on the parsely you use the outer leaves first...the leaves grow from the inside of hte plant outwards.
Believe it or not, cilantro is a cool weather plant. So, it probably won't last you all summer. Plus, it has a short life meaning you generally need to plant seeds every few weeks to have it last for its growing season. If you have a cooler/shadier spot, you can try to put it there, but it's really going to be an uphill battle keeping it from going to seed.
cilantro is a a spring/early summer plant. Mine went to seed mid-June last year, and this year didn't even MAKE it to June what with the crazy weather in May. Once you start to get the tiny leaves and then flowers it is done for.
for basil you can and should harvest it regularly, I pinch the leaves from the top to help it get bushier and to prevent flowering.
