From "House," apparently it's funny but DH and I can't figure out why. House has a black eye. Someone asks him what happened, and he says, "I was mowing the lawn when the phone rang."

Re: Do you get this joke?
Yeah, I agree. It's ridiculous - that's the point.
I dont get it
I don't know...is it just a way to change the subject because the person is suppose to ask who called?
this
I'd be distracted trying to follow that. If that was the point, mission accomplished.
It's funny because you're meant to spend five minutes trying to figure out how that results in a black eye. And because Hugh Laurie could read the phone book and make it funny.
Half open door in the dark. I've done it, but didn't get a black eye.
This is what I thought as well. Of course, my brain is just mostly geared toward dark humor in the first place, so maybe that's why my mind goes there.
It's based on a joke / urban legend / true story:
"What happened to your face?"
"I was doing the ironing when the phone rang."
House is simply putting a surreal twist on an old joke.
"Battered women" indeed. Sheesh.
