mulching and crocus question

In my front yard, I've been laying down newspaper as a weed barrier and putting mulch over it. So far it's been working great.

I'm scared to do it in my back yard though. I have some crocuses back there, and I don't know where they are planted. Every year the bunnies eat the leaves and within a couple weeks, I have no idea where they went. The rest of my plants are easy to find, but the crocuses must have that tasty flavor in bunny world.

So, my question is, if I lay down some newspapers and mulch back there, are the crocuses going to be able to come up? Should I wait until they sprout next year to mulch? Or are they going to die anyway because they taste so good?
