Lake George - NY/VT driving question

I am driving to VT this week for a wedding, and I am coming back Sunday through Lake George (prob 4pm-ish).  We generally come down 149 to Route 9 to I-87.

EVERY time we go through Lake George, like where the Outlets are, it is a mess.  Because of the timing, we usually hit it so we are sitting in traffic for like an hour (where 149 hits Route 9).  It has been a nightmare - 9mos pregnant and stuck in the car for an hour when I had to pee, or the kids crying.  This time I will have my teething DD in the car, and she hates the carseat, so if we sit in the car like that she will be hysterical, and I won't have any way to deal with it (pull over on the side of the road and bounce her on my shoulder?).

Please, if anyone has any suggestions for me to alternatives, I would love to hear them.  Like an alternate route that doesn't get bottlenecked, or a different time of day, or anything.  Or what you think about 4pm at the outlets on Father's Day - will it be busy like it always is?  Thanks so much ladies!  I am a little panicky!

Re: Lake George - NY/VT driving question

  • The bad news is that Lake George will be crazy from now until Labor Day. Do you have a GPS? Mapquest allows you to select an "avoid highways" route or "all highways" route, I believe. When we go to the NECI, we get on the northway at exit 16 (where we live) and get off well past Lake George. Also, try US 4. I cannot remember the exit now, but I know you can still enter VT at an exit further north than Lake George. I am someone who doesn't mind adding a bit of mileage as long as I am contantly moving rather than sitting in traffic. Hope this helps!

  • You certainly want to avoid that area if you can manage it because it's the Hudson Valley firemans parade up there this weekend and lots of people will probably stay over and be traveling back home that day.  The parade is actually Saturday so if you are returning home Sunday it shouldn't be AS BAD as Saturday but I know my family will be coming home Sunday as will most of the other members of our fire company.  Just and FYI - I have no suggestion since that's usually the way I go to VT.
  • Where in Vermont are you going to?  You can probably take 4 and avoid all that traffic.  I don't think there's a time that you won't get stuck there in the summer unfortunately.

  • We are going to Burlington.  Usually we hop over to 22A and go up (like through Vergennes).
  • I would take Route 4 south through Fort Ann and into Hudson Falls/Fort Edward.  Then you can cut over to South Glens Falls and onto the Northway (I-87).

Good luck!  I stay far, far away from Lake George Village and the outlets this time of year.
