new house-trying to figure out what I have!

Hi, I'm new here. We just moved into a new house a couple weeks ago. The people who lived here before have apparently been neglecting the yard for a LONG time. There is a lot of good stuff here (huge hydrangea and peony bushes) but also TONS of weeds, as well as a lot of plants that I have no idea what they are....they could be weeds or they could not be. My MIL came over and we did one area by my fence where we pulled out everything we knew was a weed....it was a lot! There is still a lot of other vegetation all over the place that I don't know what to do with because I don't know if it's supposed to be there or not! Can anyone recommend a good website for plant identification? I know that there has to be something out there but I'm having a hard time finding it!

Re: new house-trying to figure out what I have!

  • Hi fellow Wisconsite!

The WI DNR has some nice resources for invasive plants (just Google it) and the USDA has some info too.  I'd check out or buy a native plant guide so you can learn to recognize the good plants.  And see if your area has a local garden club.  Mine has been super helpful with identifiying what we had from the previous owners.  They came to my house for a "garden tour" which was more like a "see the one flower bed I've redone and help identify all the nasty weeds I have tour."  LOL!

Oh and google garlic mustard.  Make sure you pull every single and second year plant of that you can find.  It's one of the most invasive plants in our area and can take years to get rid of (the seeds can last for 10 years before they sprout).  Keep an eye on the areas you just pulled plants.  If there was any seeds in that area they will be growing there soon.

  • Thanks! My mom already pointed out the garlic mustard to me...unfortunately I have TONS of it. Some of it was like 3 ft. tall! That stuff sucks. There are sooo many weeds. I probably have every kind of weed native to Wisconsin growing in here! There is a state trail and forest area directly behind my yard so the yards can easily get very overgrown with everything that's back there.
  • Join the club I have over half an acre of it!  We live in the country so we have some of everything also.  Last fall we cleared some brush in our woods to create a fenced in dog yard and guess what popped up everywhere?  Garlic mustard and a lot of it.  Luckily, the majority of it is first year plants but we're taking action to not let them get to their second year.  But we have it around the rest of our property too.  The previous owners attempted to compost it...big mistake.  Now we can't use the compost pile and it spread from there like wild fire.

I'd rattle off a list of weeds but I'm much better at recognizing them in person than actually knowing their names, lol.  Dames rocket (looks like garden phlox but only has 4 pedals) you'll see the purple and white flowers growing alongside the road, crown vetch, and burdock are some of the weeds I have.
