Anyone own a business? re: start-up
Not a small side business that you do part-time along with your regular full-time job.
But the type of business that would require you to quit your job to make the business change? (hopefully I worded that correctly so it's understandable)
- How did you and your Dh bring yourselves to make that major change?
- What sacrifices, by you and/or your Dh were made?
- What kind of funds did you use for start up capital? Loan, 401k, 2nd mortgage or saved for years, etc.?
I'm sure I'll have more questions down the road, but I'm drawing a blank for more right now.
Any other information you would like to include???

Hey J!
Are you on FB right now? Let's IM, if you have the time??
- What kind of funds did you use for start up capital?? Loan, 401k, 2nd mortgage or saved for years, etc.?3A - Pretty much nothing. I don't have any real money needs since I'm working from home, I have no products and it's my sweat that is making it happen. It's VERY hard to stay on task and be motivated all.the.time. I'm nesting right now...hahaha. But it's about creating a new balance. Waking up every morning, showering, putting on makeup and going to your office even if it's in your house. ?As long as you have the drive and put up with the ups and down you'll be good. Also you HAVE to put your foot down. When you are starting up esp if it's from home friends and family just assume that you can do lunch all the time, visit etc. I haven't had it that bad but have heard from several friends and business associates that work out of their homes how hard it can be. Good luck on your endeavor!?
Hey J!
Sorry - I posted this and then went to the store. I'm home now though if you are on fb. I'll send you a message on there too.
Hey there!
Sorry chiming in so late, but wanted to answer, since i work f/t for myself.
For me, i made the change because it is ultimately where i wanted to be and i knew it. I did quit my f/t 9-5 job and worked f/t retail for the steady income while building my business and also for the flexibility in hours. It allowed me a day or two off during the week, as well as going into work at 1 or 2 in the afternoon. I won't lie, it sucked doing both.
I think talking about funds is not black and white. It all depends upon what the type of business is. Is it totally serviced based, or a store where you need inventory. These will be different and so will the start up costs. I'm happy to talk $ with you offline if you want.
There were (and still are) a bunch of sacrifices. Not necessarily monetarily, but the nature of my business and some deadlines require me to work nights and/or weekends sometimes. So that sux if we want to make plans.
The biggest piece(s) of advice i can give are:
Research, research, research. Make SURE you have a business plan. Not only will this give you your financial goals, but it will also allow you to borrow from the bank. Keep your business account and personal accounts separate. That is one the biggest mistakes i made in the beginning and it made a nightmare when it came time for tax season. Hire a good accountant. They will be your lifesaver. Get help from your local SCORE group. They are tough, but will open your eyes and help guide you.
Lastly, you will get out of it what you put into it. It is hard, hard work. It is not all glamorous all the time. But, the trade off is that the money you make was based on your hard work, passion and desire to be your own boss!
OH- and give yourself a paycheck. Otherwise, what are you working for? Even if it is small to start, you will feel so much more accomplished.
Let me know if you have any other questions!
