Recommend your SLR Camera!
Pleeeease! I know Zoi's mom takes her gorgeous photos with a Nikon D60. What else do people use?
And while we are at it, what editing software do you use?
TIA!
Re: Recommend your SLR Camera!
I got an Nikon D40 last November for my 35th birthday. I've been using it primary as a point-and-shot on the auto settings and just recently have started playing with the other shooting options. I want to get a zoom lens for it, but the one that came with the kit is great for most purposes.
I used to use Photoshop, but the computer that had it installed died. So, once were up and running again I'll probably just go with Elements or something fairly simple since I don't have tons of time to dink around with editing. Just color corrections, cropping, etc.

I have a Nikon D300s and I use primarily Lightroom to organize and edit photos. I love both but neither come cheap. We used to have a Nikon D80, which was a great starter camera for us. Easy to use, reliable, and we could purchase higher quality lenses and know that we would be able to use them when we were ready to upgrade our camera body. I've heard really good things about the D90 and the D5000 - both of which can do video, I believe. Costco usually carries both models in kits at good prices. I second Photoshop Elements for basic photo editing - most people don't need all the bells and whistles that come with the full version of Photoshop. Costco also carries PS Elements and it goes on sale a few times a year.
I have the Nikon D5000 and LOVE it! Although I have no clue how to use it other than in Auto, but that will come all in good time. I have recently printed the 12 week course on Two Peas in a Bucket to help get better aquainted with the settings so I can start shooting in other modes other than Auto. It's fun!
I'm currently shopping around for editing programs now. I have heard Lightroom or Photoshop Elements are good, but I downloaded a free trial of Lightroom and I'm at a total loss...it's confusing. So I'm now trying to download a free trial of Photoshop Elements to see if that is easier to use. I have also been reading of Microsoft Digital Image Suite, but I'm not sure how easy that is either or if it's even worth it.

I have a Canon Rebel T1i and I love it
I currently have a kit lens for everyday use (18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS) as well as a 50mm f/1.8 lens.
For editing, if I'm in a hurry, I just use Google's Picasa. But for real editing, I use Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop. I *love* Lightroom.
There's always going to be the Nikon vs. Canon debate but both make great cameras and lenses so go with whatever camera feels better in your hands.
I have a Nikon D90 and I am IN LOVE. I was hesitant about jumping ship to Nikon because I've only used Canons in the past, but I have no regrets (that said, I'd probably have been happy with an equivalent Canon as well - I'm not a die hard for either brand). I mostly use it on the Auto setting while I learn how to use the others, and it still gives me fabulous photos.
For editing, I use Photoshop (full version). I wanted the full version because it's what I'm used to and I actually use many of the tools, but I agree with pps that Elements would probably be just fine for your needs.

To expand on my last post, I just purchased Photoshop Elements 8 today. After using the free trial, I preferred PSE8 to Lightroom because I thought it was MUCH easier to use for me. Since I'm such a beginner with this stuff, I found Lightroom to stress me out!
Good luck and let us know what you end up chosing for your new DSLR

We have a Nikon D5000. I just use the auto setting since I don't have much time to learn the settings. I recently purchase this lense and love it!
Oooooohhhh....I have that lens on my wish list
Glad to hear you love it
