I have spent over a week dropping hints to MH about going back since sanae78 posted about the hawaiian airlines cheap prices. He was generally non-responsive since he perfers to stay around home during the summer (the only time it's nice weather around here - according to him. I like rain!). But just now, he finally said OK so I rushed and booked us tix to Maui the week before Labor day. I am soo excited (although I wish he was more excited). I've never been to Maui before - does anyone have accomodation recommendations? We're actually going with my parents, so we're looking for a rental with a kitchen for 4. I haven't been on vacation since...well since we got married. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Re: Going to Maui!
We always stay at the Kahana Village - it's a little on the pricey side, but the location seriously can't be beat!

We stayed in unit#3 last time - the place is soooo freaking gorgeous

yay!! i'm pretty decided that we'll go to hawaii in august or early september, but now i can't decide which island! definitely considering maui...
(i wish MH was more excited about it too - he's leaving the decisions about this vacation up to me and doesn't seem to really care - but oh well, we're going. haha!)
How exciting! I hope you guys have a wonderful vacation.
For places to stay, I'm a big fan of Maui Banyan in South Kihei. It's across the street from Kamaole Beach 2 and Kamaole Beach 3 is half a block away, it's within walking distance to shops and restaurants, it has covered parking, and it had more than one pool so it never feels crowded. Plus they have really nice BBQ areas at the pools. Like most condo complexes, the individual units are hit or miss since they are indvidually owned. I suggest checking VRBO - the last time I looked, most of the Maui Banyan units listed were updated and cheaper than going through the main property management company (which I believe is Aston).
If you are looking for something beachfront, I really like Hale Pau Hana. It fronts Kamaole Beach 2 and is across the street from shops and restaurants. They have a nice pool area. I have only been inside two units, but they were bright and clean. The views were awesome. I also like the Mana Kai. It fronts Keawakapu Beach, which is a beautiful beach primarily lined with luxurious homes. Mana Kai went under a recent major renovation in the common areas, which turned out nicely. While it's not close to shops and restaurants, they do have the Five Palms restaurant on property and a little gift shop/mini mart.
Lastly, I love the Pineapple Inn. It's not beachfront nor is it near the beach. But it is a lovely property with beautiful gardens and a pool/hot tub area with ocean views. It's located in South Maui in the Maui Meadows neighborhood. They have rooms for rent or they have a cute 2 bedroom cottage with a living room and kitchen. This is where my parents stayed for our wedding. We loved it.
Have fun!
I forgot to mention that the 2 bedroom units at Mana Kai are kind of funky. Some people might see this as a good thing but the second bedrooms are located across the public hallway. So really, it's like staying in a one bedroom unit with a second, separate studio/bedroom across the hall.
Thanks, Plumeriapal & kaesha, for all the recommendations. I guess I know what I'll be doing tomorrow on the computer.
Sandra - is this your babymoon, then????!?!
yup!
I've been really wanting to go to Italy, so I seriously considered that, since it's much easier to bring a baby to HI than to Italy...but...we're on a tight timeline
and Italy is so expensive and hot when we'd want to go. My primary goals in going to Italy are to see the historic sites, hike along the coast, etc, and eat - all of which would need to be scaled back while pregnant. MH and I have agreed we'll try to take 1 week-long vacation each year sans kids (after the kid(s) a little bit older; and one vacation with the kids, of course!), so Italy is on the list for then
I, too, have stayed at the Maui Banyan before. I noticed it to be very quiet and maintained so nicely. We really liked it. We always enjoyed crossing the street and then just walking the beach! Oh paradise!
Good friends ours stayed here for three weeks earlier this year, with their family and had an absolutely great stay. A cute house in Lahaina, and short distance to the beach. If you need any further info, let me know
SQUEEEEE!!!!!! So much fun! Maui has been by far my favorite island (granted I have only been to two)
The first time we stayed we stayed down in Wailea for hubby's work function, but the second time we went we stayed at the Maui Kai Rm 306 (beach front and AMAZING views - this one is a bit older, but it's very clean, convenient and you can't beat the view you get). It looks like the owners just remodled the bathroom and looks very nice. We also just recently stayed at the Kapalua Ridge in Kapalua. This one was very nice and had a great view, but it was not oceanfront and it was more north shore. Still very nice and we would probably stay there again.
Staying in Lahaina, Kaanapali or Kahana are probably your best bets as far as location goes. Have fun and good luck planning your trip!
