I'm officially Mrs. B!

I took yesterday afternoon off and changed my name at:

Social Security

DMV

Voter's Registration

Bank -ordered new checks & debit card

Home/auto insurance

Health Insurance

Credit cards

I also decided since I had spent 5 hours on the phone with the credit card companies that I might as well spend awhile longer and cancel a couple cards that I haven't used in forever and a day. I ended up arguing for 20 freaking minutes with the "card specialist" lady about why I wanted to cancel my card. I was about to strangle her by the end of the phone call.

Next up on the name change list is:

Passport

School loans

Federal grant

Nursing license

Airline mileage plan

and I think that's about it! Am I forgetting anything?

Re: I'm officially Mrs. B!

  • One of my friends told me that I should also inform the three credit bureaus of my name change so that it will be correct on my credit report.  I still haven't done this, but it seems like good advice.  :)

And congrats on becoming Mrs. B!  You did it a lot faster than I did!

  • Wow, you got a lot accomplished!  I still haven't changed my voter's registration not have I called the 3 credit bureaus... Congrats Mrs. B!

For future reference, you only have to say "I'm canceling this account." And if they try to argue with you then tell them if they can't complete the cancellation then to transfer you to someone who can. It sounds like you're done, but just in case anyone else reads this. It's their job to try and get you to keep the card, and some companies are more pushy about it than others (Ahem, Capital One, Ahem).

I did the same thing as you once, a long time ago, and I was getting so frustrated. Then I finally just yelled at the guy "I'm canceling this account, and it's none of your business why." Then he just completed it in the 10 seconds it normally takes and the call was done.

Good job with the name changes!

  • You go girl!!  I still haven't changed my name at my bank... lol... but other than that I think I'm set everywhere else.
  • Well done!  That's a very productive day of name changin!
