July 4th

This is our first 4th of July in Boston, and we plan on heading into the city for the concert and fireworks. We're excited, but are there any tips/tricks of which we should be aware?

Re: July 4th

  • I don't really have any special tricks but last year we stood on the Longfellow Bridge to watch fireworks (my ILs do this every year when they come to Boston for the 4th) and we had a perfect view. It really was not crowded at all once you got on the bridge and the fireworks were right in front of us.
  • It's extremely crowded. If you want up close, get there very early.

  • Thanks ladies. I used to live in DC and would head downtown for the fireworks very early, knowing that because it was so crowded it was sort of an all day affair, but after living in Orlando (where there are fireworks every night if you want them, and we would just go hang out at a friends' house who could see the Disney fireworks from their backyards on the 4th)... and overseas (where the 4th of July obviously isn't celebrated)... and then South Florida (where there are multiple options for fireworks - some of them right on the beach - and you could show up right beforehand for a good "seat"), I've forgotten what it's like to actually have to build the plans into your day.

I'm really excited. One VERY rainy year in Orlando, a bunch of us got together at some friends' apartment and watched the Boston fireworks on tv. Will be nice to see them in person this year. :)

  • Ditto getting there super early, like first thing in the AM, if you want to be on the actual Esplanade.  I went two years ago for the first time in probably 15 years and it was so different from what I remembered.  Way more crowded, way more police, way more barricades and restrictions on movement. It made me kind of sad!

I wanted DH to experience the fireworks with the Pops playing in the background as he's not from here but I don't know if we'll ever devote a whole day to the event.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • I have never been down to the Esplanade because I can't deal with the crowds. I did however have good luck watching the fireworks from the Mass Ave Bridge....but definitely get onto it from the Cambridge side if you do go there.  I would usually walk from Central Sq.
  • Yay! Thanks ladies!
  • I live right over the Longfellow bridge, so I think we'll just hit up the rooftop garden to watch the fireworks.  This will be our first Boston 4th of July, as well.

  • If you're a member of the Museum of Science their is a special event there and you can watch from the top of the parking lot for a pretty good view, but there are a limited number of tickets.  It looks like they are still available and this way they can kind of limit the viewing so it isn't super crowded.  Def. take public transportation if you're going in from the burbs.  So much easier.
