POLL! How much debt do you have?

According to MSN, the average American household has $8k debt in just credit cards, and as of 2003 almost $19k per household in overall debt EXCLUDING mortgages. We spend more than we have. How do you compare?

Re: POLL! How much debt do you have?

  • DH has a lot of student loans! That I don't know when we can pay off!!

  • No CC debt for us, thank goodness.  All of ours is student loans and my car.  Which is still a lot. :(

  • Aside from mortgage, less than 3K on 2 credit cards total.  Most of it will be paid off by next month.  I have never taken a student loan and I own my truck outright.

  • we have no CC debt but more than $50k in student loans, and two car payments Sad its depressing
  • Considering I've only been out of law school for 3 years, I'm definitely in the highest category.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • Our car debt is emberassing. On the bright side, both of our cars are worth $3k+ more than what we owe on them, so totalled, stolen, or just sold - we wouldn't be in the hole.

Now we need a new poll - how much are your car payments!? I thought ours were high ($300 per car), but have talked to a lot of people lately whose are much higher than ours!

  • Just paid off my credit card and closed the account (woohoo!), DH has 3 CCs, but only has a balance on 1 ($1500). Unfortunately, we fall right around $32000 with my car and H's student loans. :(
  • we have less than $7k in student loan debt, and zero car payments.

the lion's share of our debt is credit cards and hospital bills.

  • No CC debt, and my student loans will be paid off by the state :)

Ours is all in the dang cars.  2 cars, a motorcycle and a travel trailer.  However, DH's truck and the trailer are paid for by his work, and we actually make extra off those.  2 of the vehicles will be paid off within a year, hopefully the trailer as well.

i was telling DH the other day that maybe he ought to become a teacher for a few years if he can find a tuition reimbursement program. 10 years of $600/month payments makes me want to vomit Sad

Yeah, mine are only $180/month.  If you teach high school math or science at a low income school in Texas for 5 consecutive years they pay back $17,500.  Any other subject is only $5k or something.

oh booo he'd totally teach like History. definitely NOT math. lol.

  • None at all. We are very un-American in our household. We consume as little as possible and enjoy cheap thrills - like reading library books. :)

  • We paid off our two credit cards over the past couple of months, so the only debt we have now (aside from our mortgage) is the minivan we bought in November.  DH's car is paid off.

  • We have some CC debt and a truck payment, but hypothetically our savings could off-set all of it, so I put 0 (aside from the house, of course).  I hope it counts that way.  :/

that's cheating. :P  that only works if we're calculating net-worth. this poll is just straight-up debt that's not mortgage.

  • We just paid off my car last month so now we don't have any car debt.  We have $1500 in credit card debt that will be paid off within a month or so.  After that we just have our mortgage and my DHs school loans.  We have come a long way though.  When we moved here 3 years ago we had about $15K in credit card debt.  It's a great feeling to be paying things off.  We finally have a positive net worth.

We have a car payment (mine) and under $2K in credit card debt.  That's it, really.  We lucked out with no student loan debt.

oh my gosh.  I'm jealous.  We pay $700/month for 20 years, then $300 a month for 10 more.  THAT is backbreaking.  sigh. Thankfully, it enabled him to get a great job so we can afford it.

needless to say, we're in the 40k+ ONLY in student loans.

We have no credit card debt and no car payments.  We pay out the wazoo for student loans, and that's it.  Thank goodness.

  • We have no CC debt, and we only owe about $2K on one of our cars - the other is paid off. However, we have over $10K in medical bills right now. Its nauseating.
  • We did the Total Money Makeover right after we got married and have been debt free (except for the mortgage) since 2007!

I get what you're saying, but the only reason we have majority of that cc debt is at the advice of a financial advisor.  He told us it's better to make payments on something as long as the interest charged is lower than what your savings is bringing in.

  • Can I just say how jealous I am of those of you who don't have student loans?  I'm grateful that I went to college and it allowed me to be a teacher but man, it's hard to make those payments.  Especially when DH feels like his degree isn't helping him.  Sad

Good job those of you who have paid off so much!  We just paid off most of our cc so we only have one now which feels good.

Ditto.  I have student loans and am getting ready to incur a significant amount more.  We are paying for DH's education as we go.

Oh yeah...I feel ya!  I'm starting grad school, too, which will allow me to hopefully make more one day but as for now it's just going to rack up more debt... I've always heard you have to spend money to make money. Guess we can just chalk it up to that.   Congrats on going back to school, though!
