Kitchen Renovations

Hey girls, has anyone renovated their kitchen and have a good contractor, or good sources for cabinets, counter tops, etc.? DH and I are planning on completely gutting our kitchen this summer, and I'm shopping around for pricing. We live in SI but would be willing to travel into Brooklyn or further if we have to. Thanks very much!

Re: Kitchen Renovations

  • We renovated our kitchen mainly by ourselves. It was too much work. I would recommend a contractor lol but we used contractor to only do work that we could not do ourselves.

For countertop, sink and cabinets we used a local store. I cannot remember the name of the company but I have the tel # 718-886-0418. Located in Flushing and you can negotiate on prices.

Hardware we found at Ikea and tiles, backsplash, faucets were a mix of Home Depot and Overstock.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the tips! I think we're going to tackle demo ourselves (what's to mess up if it's all coming out right?) and leave the rest to the pros. And I never thought to check overstock for this kind of stuff, thanks!

  • Hello,

I am a furniture maker and cabinet maker located in Brooklyn. If you are planning on hiring a contractor anyway, I would leave the demo to the contractor as well. You just don't know what can happen and its better if liability isn't on your shoulders. I can give you names and contact for interior designers/architects/contractors that I recommend and trust. You can also visit my website for photos of work I have done. www.pickettfurniture.com I would be more than happy to visit and submit a bid.

     Best,

  • I had both my upstairs and downstairs kitchens renovated and am very happy.  At the time, we used all recommendations from Consumer Reports, including cabinets and appliances.  In my apartment, we went with Lowe's Diamond Cabinets (not custom but not stock either...very good quality).  Upstairs, for our tenants, we went with cheaper Ikea cabinets which are really holding up well and we are happy. I have a good contractor too if you are interested.  Both kitchens were completely gutted and renovated.
