Has anyone seen the movie Up in the Air? If you have seen it what were your thoughts?
We watched it last night and I was hoping for a cute chick flick. I was sooo irritated with that movie by the end. Why would Clooney play in such a stupid movie?
Re: Up In The Air
I actually thought it was very clever movie, very humorful and charismatic of George Clooney. You have to like his character, "the traveling corporate downsizer" who is so devoted to his job, so devoted to the process, and devoted to getting those frequent flyer miles.
One of my fave quotes:
Ryan Bingham: [on getting through airport security] Never get behind old people. Their bodies are littered with hidden metal and they never seem to appreciate how little time they have left. Bingo, Asians. They pack light, travel efficiently, and they have a thing for slip on shoes. Gotta love 'em.
Natalie Keener: That's racist.
Ryan Bingham: I'm like my mother, I stereotype. It's faster.
or this one:
Natalie Keener: He broke up with me by text message.
Ryan Bingham: Wow. That's kind of like getting fired over the Internet.
The director, Jason Reitman, is known for his quirky and dark humor. Have you seen Juno or Thank You for not Smoking? It falls under the same category as this. It's like cilantro - you either like it or you don't.
This is what I thought of it too. I enjoyed it and found it entertaining. Now, The Men That Stare at Goats, I wondered why Clooney did that movie. I was very diappointed. I thought it was a bad, bad movie.
I thought he was trying to step out of his comfort zone from playing gorgeous men who steal money...but "Goats" was a strange role...but I thought Jeff Bridges made the movie for me or the entire "Jedis"ish powers to be. Yeah it was totally unrelated to actual fight tactics that are commonly used in the Middle East, maybe a slight poke at "peaceful" war tactics for us right? The "attack me" scene with the goats...hilarious. I might have a strange sense of humor...so it had me rolling in laughter.
I do agree that there were very funny parts to the movie. I think when it got bad for me was when the chick had a husband and kids at home. I was sooo irritated and done with the movie then.
I really liked it. It wasn't what I expected it to be at all. Loved it. The more I think about it the more I liked it.
The character of the young girl-- New grad wanting to come in and make a name for herself changing a business without really knowing what the whole picture is. So real in business. Those are the newbies you really want to kick down a notch until they learn the way things really are. I loved how emotionally fragile and immature she was in all aspects of life except for her pigeon holed focus on what she learned in school. Laughable and real.
Since I travel so much I totally empathize with his character. Frequent Flyer miles are all he has. It's sad. But you do get caught up in that if you have nothing to come home to. Sad when you think your millionth mile is an acomplishment while you have absolutely no family or friends. His sisters wedding, wow. Sad.
Now the love interest. First of all, what a GORGEOUS woman that actress is! Without giving anything away to those who haven't seen it, I almost threw up when he went to her house. I was so sad for him. Plus I know that woman and that is very, very real.
I guess I looked at it from a different angle. I know all of those characters and I thought it was really well done.
