Touchdown Jesus

Anyone else see that Touchdown Jesus burnt down last night?  According to the news, it cost 250,000$!! A bit of irony.  Anyway, perhaps it's a sign that the Bengals will be "on fire" this year Yes

Re: Touchdown Jesus

  • Yeah it was all over my facebook feed this morning and the buzz at work, too.  One of my friends is the reporter that covered the story for Channel 9.

I agree it's totally ironic.  In a way I'm kind of sad because I always looked forward to seeing it (even though I thought it was totally rediculous) on my way home from a long drive.  I read that they plan to rebuild it.  Seems like  they could do so many more productive things with that money but hey, it's their choice.  Hopefully they'll choose better materials and will ground it this time around.

  • I hear they are planning to rebuild - it was due to get a coat of paint this summer, so probably saving them some money with that now that it will be rebuilt by insurance.
  • This was literally the first thing I heard this morning, thanks radio alarm! haha

Although I too thought it was a bit over the top, I loved passing it and it was done in good taste. After reading what it was made of, I'm surprised it hasn't happened before now.

And the pictures that the have of it on wcpo, just the steel structure, is CREEPY!

  • Have you guys seen the video? It went up really fast. I think he looks sort of terminator-ish right now. I never liked it, but it is a shame the church was damaged though.
  • I was at a large breakfast event this morning, and this was the hot topic. One lady said she was getting annoyed that people thought it was something to joke about. Which, I dunno, I guess you could probably go too far with it.

But, come on. If you can't find at least a little humor in this situation, you are taking life way too seriously. Stick out tongue

Oh, also - this story is featured on the main Yahoo! page.

  • DH just called to say this is on the Yahoo main page and an old friend who's in Denver just texted me about Jesus! haha This story is really getting around.

Steve&Heather- I agree. I am Catholic and I think even the most devout Catholic (which I'm far from) has to see at least some humor in this situation.

  • One of the Dayton news stations said it cost $500K and church members were scared it was a sign that God was displeased.   I really hope they don't rebuild.

  • They're planning to rebuild. Apparently, they lost all the AV equipment in the ampitheatre behind the statue. Total cost of the damage (right now) is $700K.

This. It was creepy to me. And considering the cost of it - as a church, you'd think they'd find a better way to spend $500k helping the community than on an ornament/decoration.

I feel the same way. I've always thought it was pretty ridiculous to have a gigantic Jesus, especially now that I know how much it cost. Half a million dollars would do so much good elsewhere. We were talking about it at a meeting this morning and someone heard they had always talked about giving Jesus a body. Maybe he'll be New and Improved Touchdown Jesus?

The cynical part of me thinks that if the church members are right and torching Touchdown was a sign from God, then maybe rebuilding isn't what God had in mind, no?

  • Rumor going around is that it was origionally built by a single donation from one man who is SUPER rich and he will be paying to have the new one built.

I wish he would donate some of that to the local food pantry or perhaps habitat for humanity. What a waste.
