Hi Austin Nesties! Sadlebred from the Atlanta and H&F boards!
I will be in Austin for business in a few weeks and am in need of some restaurant recommendations. I'm definitely a foodie and love most types of food including vegetarian, BBQ, Chinese, Mexican, American, Italian, etc. Good and cheap works as does somewhere a bit nicer (but not more than about $40/meal). I'm staying by the airport if it makes a difference, but I will have a rental car and my GPS. I don't mind driving up to half an hour or so.
Does anyone have any good recommendations? If you ever need anything or are coming to Atlanta, feel free to drop by our board!
Re: Restaurant Recommendations Needed
OMG! Just got back from Jack Allan's Kitchen! And it is to DIE for!
http://www.jackallenskitchen.com/
some of my favorites:
Moonshine (American @ Red River & 4th-ish, somewhere around $15/entree)
La Traviata (Italian @ Congress & 3rd-ish, ~$15-20
Asti (Italian in Hyde Park)
Matt's El Rancho (Mexican - pretty cheap)
Uchi (Sushi - a tad expensive but worth it - definitely under $40/person though)
Some I've been wanting to try: Olivia, Wink, Zoot
Ditto Jack Allen's. Its amazing!
Other suggestions: Maudie's (any of them), Sushi Zushi or Uchis, Broken Spoke for a great Chicken Fried Steak. Other than that, the places I would recommend are too far out of the way.
i've been there two or three times now and really like it too!
i haven't lived in austin in a few years but Kerby Lane is almost always one of my must go destinations (good queso & pancakes) and yes i frequently eat queso for an appetizer before enjoying pancakes for dinner
there are several locations although my personal fave is still the one on Kerby Lane (its pretty central so not too bad of a drive from the airport area)

i feel like Chuy's is pretty landmark so should be mentioned (go to the one on Barton Springs Rd) http://www.chuys.com/
i ate here last time i was in austin on business and was dining solo. not the best i've ever had but prices were decent and it was tasty. http://www.getsumdimsum.com/getsumdimsum/index.php
for a burger: http://www.mightyfineburgers.com/
for BBQ: Saltlick, County Line, Rudy's (i think all of these are a bit more of a trek for you)
hmmmm what else hasn't been mentioned? oh if you want to grab a quick sandwich, hit up Thundercloud Subs. http://www.thundercloud.com/ its nothing fancy but its also nice to eat local when you're travelling and thundercloud is an austin institution.
I was also going to recommend Chuy's. I also love Z-Tejas, but kinda far from where you will be.
pp mentioned Asti's, my mom's good friend is the owner/chef and it's awesome.
I love Olivia's, also another good friend of the family is the owner/chef there. His evening menu is a little odd, but great brunch menu on Sundays if you're in town.
I love Uchi, it's my new fave.
Actually, the Z-Tejas on west 6th wouldn't be too far at all... I'll amend my previous rec of Matt's El Rancho to be Tex-Mex and Z-Tejas for a little more Mexican/Cali-Mex
Moonshine, Kerbey Lane, Chuy's, Billy's Brew-B-Q, Zax Pints and Plates, Cypress Grill, Casa Garcia's and Maudie's Hacienda are some of my favorite places.

You might be interested in Chef Tyson Cole's Austin recommendations. I can definitely second Fino for cocktails. And a friend of mine is crazy about East Side Kings, though I haven't been there myself.
Olivia is really good. You might also enjoy Frank in the Warehouse District. It's all hot dogs, veggie dogs, and bratwurst.
Darn it, the nest ate my post!
Check out East Side Showroom for local food--as in, their meat comes from area farms. (When I went, their special was goat ribs. I had chicken, haha!)
It's in a really touristy/bar area, but I went to Parkside a couple of weeks ago with a friend who knows the manager, and they send over a bunch of tasty small plates. I also loved their (alcoholic) Cherry Limeaide!
In the convention center area, check out Max's Wine Dive. Their slogan is something like "gourmet comfort food." Yum!

Oh yeah, seeing East Side Kings reminded me--you have to try out some Austin Trailer Food!
Here's an article with a big list of options. On that list, I'd pick Mighty Cone, Torchy's Tacos, Odd Duck Farm to Trailer and Gourdough's. I don't remember seeing it on the list, but I think Flip Happy Crepes is very tasty, too.

BBQ --- Iron Works, Stubb's, Green Mesquite, Salt Lick (Driftwood). Though my all time fave BBQ place is in Lockhart, Kruetz Market
Chinese --- Din Ho
Mexican --- Sazon on S. Lamar, Hecho in Mexico on William Cannon, La Fonda (people seem to like it, it's interior and pricey),
Latin American Cuisine --- Elsi's (El Salvadoran cuisine), El Arbol (Argentina)
Italian --- La Traviata, La Taverna
Austin Only --- Magnolia Cafe, Kerby Lane, Woodland
Sushi Fusion --- Uchi (no reservations accepted and always crowded, but worth it!)
Thanks, everyone! I really appreciate it! I will be in Austin in a few weeks. Since I'm a cyclist, Mellow Johnny's is on my list of places to go...
Forgot to add that Trailer food is really starting to become a hot thing here in Atlanta, too. http://www.atlantafoodcarts.com/ Too bad I live out in the burbs and can't get to try many of the trailers.
