We thought that the problem with Mike's van was the radiator hose. Well someone looked at it yesterday and it's the head gasket. We don't have the $1100 or more to pay for it to get it fixed. I think that sounds kind of high? So his plan is to just drive it to/frm wk. I will commute with him when he has to work up north. And when the car dies, we will just use the one car for a while.
Re: So.....
That totally stinks. Sorry. :-(
I have heard that head gaskets are very expensive to replace, but I didn't realize they were quite that much (I was thinking more like $800, for whatever reason, but I really don't know).
Can you ask Ben what he thinks? Also if we got the parts and if this is something he could do, could he take payments? Let me know what you think. Otherwise, we will do what I said above. Could be worse. LOL

That's fine. Thanks!!! Also ask him if there is a way to may be do something to make the vehicle last longer without having to do the repair if possible?
O.k. Here is what Ben said.
1. DO NOT DRIVE THE VAN AT ALL. The more you drive it, the worse off it's going to be. You may do damage to other parts then the engine.
2. The price you were quoted is very reasonable for a shop to do the repair.
3. Does the van have more then 120,000 miles? If so it's not worth doing this repair because the bottom half of the engine won't be able to take the stress. Eventually the bottom half will give out and your money will basically be wasted on the top half.
4. If you want Ben to repair it he wouldn't be able to do it until sometime next month.
5. He is quoting you $750 for him to do it. That includes labor, gaskests, machine work and misc. parts that will be needed.
6. If it's over 120,000 miles you're better off replacing the engine. It's going to be more expensive then the repair but it's better use of your money.
So that's what he had to say about it. There's a lot to think on.
