My pinto beans adventure

I wanted to make George pinto beans, fried potatoes and cornbread on Sunday night. He missed his mom's country cooking and since I have no clue how to fix stuff like that he never gets so I thought I try :)

I soaked the beans overnight and then put in the crockpot on low on Sunday morning at 8:30 before we went to church. Around 3:30 we put them on high. You would think that after 7 hours on low and 3 hours on high for a total of 10 hours you would think that the pinto beans (with hog jaw (or however you spell it) mind you) would be done. Well nooooo. They were still not soft or even a brown color (like george likes). We had McDonalds for dinner that night.

I left the pinto beans on low overnight and then when I got home tonight I put them on high.

So basically 20 hours of cooking the pinto beans are done. I don't really care for pinto beans but they actually turned out pretty good. The funny thing is that George got called in to work basketball so he won't get to eat when I just cooked (pinto beans, mashed potatoes and cornbread) until about 9:30 tonight.

I can't believe it took 20 hours for these beans to cook. I made them one time before and it only took about 8 hours. I have no clue what I did wrong.

So that is my 20 hour pinto bean adventure. Next time I make these for the boy I will cook them overnight and most of the day.

My crockpot is new and does fine for other stuff. I was not sure what was going on with these beans.

  • i bet you should have cooked them on high for a long amount of time and then cut it on low.

also sometimes it is easier to cook dry beans when you are using a pressure cooker.

I might try the high for 7-8 hours next time, if there is a next time :)

  • geez louise! i think i would've thrown them in the trash after the first day. good for you for sticking it out! haha

i started making our black beans from dry beans. i just soak them for a few hours, then boil them for about an hour and they're fine. pinto beans must be a lot stronger!
