NER: yard help

our back yard has a thick coat of ivy covering several feet at the far end and another strip along one of the sides. the rest -- majority -- of the lawn is plain ole grass. when we moved in two months ago, the ivy area was neat and well contained. now, the mess is creeping into the yard.

yo, i'm scared it's taking over. i'm a city gal, this is my first experience caring for a yard and i have no idea what i'm doing back there, lol. H tried to mow right over the part that's encroaching on the lawn, but it didn't do much.

what do we do? throw down some weed-killer? or be lazy and call a lawn specialist? and any idea how much it would cost to take care of this? or, better yet, can i be really really lazy and wait till spring?

like i said, i'm clueless. tia.

Re: NER: yard help

  • I'm clueless too so I googled and got this from Scott's Lawn Service.

    Q. Can you get rid of ground ivy? It seems to take over our yard every year.
    A. Yes. But ground ivy is one of the tougher weeds to eliminate. It is just one of more than 50 common lawn weeds that we control in late spring. As soon as these weeds are gone, we begin watching for new weeds to pop up. If they do, we stop them before they can get a foothold. (And there's no charge for this follow-up service if you're a full-program customer.)

  • Vinegar is the greenist way to kill it (I have tried it on weeds and it is great).  It is also very cheap.
