...make me want to move home to Pennsylvania.
Ok, we just rented a house. It is a very small, older home, but it is meticulously clean and there is no food out whatsoever and I never leave dishes in the sink or anything like that. Since we have moved in about 3 weeks ago, I have seen a HUGE cockroach in my living room. I literally just want to cry.
Please tell me that I'm not alone and recommend your exterminator. I am at my wit's end and I feel like I can't relax. I looked them up and I think they are called smokeybrown cockroaches. I worry now that this is just part of living in an older home. Am I doomed to deal with this for the next year???
Re: The bugs in this state...
It is most likely what most call "palmetto bugs" and what my dad from South GA called "water bugs." See, it sounds nicer than giant roach, right? They do come in from the outside and can be especially bad if you have a lot of pine trees around. They are huge and gross, but are simply part of living in the South. It doesn't matter how clean your house is, these beasts find a way in.
At my parents' house they will come through the drain, so you can try keeping your drains closed when not in use. Luckily, we don't have much of a problem at our house. *knock on wood*
I lived in "the woods" for a while and I had the palmetto bugs / largeass cockroaches coming in all.the.time. I actually went to the store, got the Combat roach hotel things and placed them throughout the place I was renting. It worked great and got rid of them the rest of the time I lived there (~2 years).
We've only had a few instances of the same in our apartment now (usually only in the hotter months) and I found that for us, the Combat stuff has worked just as well.
They are annoying and have nothing to do with how clean your place is. Definately try keeping drains closed too. They will become less of an annoyance soon. GL.
We finally gave up this year and hired an exterminator.
A lot of people on here like Arrow Exterminating and Northwest.

Don't worry, I had the same freak out as you when I moved South in Oct! The day we moved in, I found a Palmetto Bug in our bathtub....I screamed like I've never screamed before! They are palmetto bugs and completely harmless....see, in just 8 months, I've already gotten accustomed to them!
I'm from the North and like you, I immediately thought it meant our house was dirty but it turns out that they're very common down here and are like flies up north! There are little black traps you can buy at WalMart, Target, etc....put them all over your house and you'll be good! Since we put them down last Fall, I've hardly seen any (I think 1 or 2 have snuck in this summer to avoid the heat but that's it).
Good luck!
Ditto this. A couple weeks ago I noticed my dog was very very focused on something. She is only usually focused like that when there is a fly in the house ( she is able to catch those like Daniel-san in the Karate Kid) , next thing you know a Palmetto bug goes running across my living room. I almost had a nervous breakdown until I googled them and learned the bolded.
One problem we did have briefly was with ants. As a result, I put Ambro around the perimeter of my house concentrating on areas with doors, and haven't had an issue since ::knock on wood::
:::siiiiiiiiiiigh:::
speak of the devil...
damn thing crawled into the coat closet last night so I'm SCREAMING for DH** to come and KILL IT!! And he won't stop WoW-ing for the 10 seconds it'll take him to kill the bastard. I was SOOOOOOOOO grossed out.
** Its in "the contract" that DH has to kill all bugs. I was pissed he wouldn't come and get it.
Call me Kat =^..^=
Ugghh. We have the same contract, except in my case it also includes anything that looks like a bug, but I can't tell if it's a bug or maybe lint, string, etc. First "is that a BUG?" then "KILL IT!"
I think a beetle-like thing flew in the house the other night. Since I don't see them, I have to go by the sound. It made "thunk" noises when it hit the window. Of course, it attacked me twice. Well, attacked, as in buzzed my ear/hair and later landed on my cheek (!!!). At that point I ran to the bedroom, lol. DH never did find it, and I only came out with all the lights off except the one next to him so if it was around, it would find him. That and my false sense of security with my little Off fan.
