Lipitor question

My DH is taking Lipitor (has been now for about 8 months) because he has really high cholesterol. I just now read the "patient advisory leaflet" and it says that Lipitor is not safe for pregnancy and to discuss with the doctor about taking 2 forms of birth control to prevent pregnancy. Is this something to worry about? We aren't on any birth control since last March. I chart and do fertility awareness method because we don't want kids for probably at least a year. Does that mean that if we accidently get pregnant now that the baby might be harmed, or does this only apply to women? Thanks for the help!

Re: Lipitor question

  • I'm thinking it applies to women....unless your husband is the one getting pregnant!  LOL!  What it probably means is that it could interfere with the effectiveness of hormonal BCP, which would mean that another method would need to be used to prevent pregnancy.

  • Really, OP?  Really??
  • Yes, engineer, really. I know it might be a dumb question to your smartness, but I really do want to know.
  • 'Your smartness' as a variation of 'your highness'?  Hmm.  I like that.  I deem that an acceptable title.
  • omg, LOL

    Hilarious.

That warning only applies to women who are taking lipitor, not men.

    Are you serious???
  • Are you on lipitor? If not, then you are fine. The verbage in the pamphlet is implying that if you're a woman of child-bearing age, you should discuss the possible side-effects with your doctor before starting lipitor. So unless your husband has a secret uterus, you're fine.

Doesn't it say this in the commercial on tv?

  • no sweetie, it only applies to women who are or can be pregnant while on lipitor.  You should be fine.

I bow before your superior smartitude.

  • Is there something your husband is hiding from you? It only means if a woman is taking it.

I am not trying to be snarky but please dont reproduce...

  • "my DH is taking Lipitor"... and then ... "you read the 'patient advisory leaflet'"...

So... your DH would be the patient in this scenario, since he is the one taking the Lipitor, correct?  And is he in any danger of becoming pregnant?

::waiting for the light bulb to go off::

Waiting for some innocuous creativity... I'll let you know.
  • A pregnant woman or a woman planning to become pregnant should not take or handle Lipitor,.

It's actually because it's rated a Category X drug (absolutely contraindicated for pregnancy), so if the woman is taking it, she should double up on BC so as to further reduce the risk of becoming pregnant and harming their spawn.

  • I'm pretty sure this only applies to women taking the medication. I doubt it does anything to your DH's sperm. He can check with your pharmacist to be sure. HTH!

  • Be careful!! If you swallow his "stuff" (if you know what I mean) while he's taking the Lipitor it can rot your eggs!!!

But at least it will lower your cholesterol in the process.

  • honey, it only applies to women, don't worry about it. I'm on Lipitor, and I'm a nurse. I know that when I am ready to have children, I have to stop taking it until I am done breastfeeding. I've studied the statins very closely. it is considered a Category X drug, which means it causes harm to fetuses. it is also not recommended during breastfeeding as not enough research has been done on the excretion of Lipitor into breast milk. and I just researched the effect of Lipitor (aka atorvastatin) on semen, and research has shown no changes in semen.
