How long is a Catholic ceremony?

Or does it depend on the church? TIA.

Re: How long is a Catholic ceremony?

  • i have only been to one catholic wedding ceremony and it lasted a little over 2 hours.
  • The one I went to was around an hour. I think it probably depends on the church & the couple. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think you can choose if you want a full mass & whether to give communion to everyone (or just take it yourself)

Indifferent Oh boy. Hope that isn't the case with this wedding. I don't think I could sit there for that long.

  • Almost all of DH's friends are catholic and their weddings have been running at just under an hour.  The longest one was probably 80 minutes.

they did a full mass and the sermon was all about sex before marriage and the sacredness of marriage itself....very awkward considering the couple had been sleeping together for at least 6 years, lol

she wasn't aware of what he was going to do his sermon on before hand but she wasn't too happy about it.

  • One of our friends' wedding had a full mass with communion.  In the catholic church, you aren't supposed to go up unless you are catholic.  Sometimes this gets awkward because people have to jump over you in the pew.  Anyway, one of our non-Catholic friends decided he'd just go up.  Well, when he got up there he didn't know what to do (hold out your hands for the wafer), so the priest asked him if he was Catholic.  He responded "I'd like communion".  Well the priest proceeded to lecture him for at least a good 5 minutes in the middle of communion!!!  It was so awkward.
  • Yikes. I could totally see that happening to my non-catholic (and religiously clueless) DH, who had no idea that he wasn't supposed to come up for communion and went up at my grandfather's funeral (I had to sit separate to carry in some stuff & do a reading). Thankfully, he either did the right thing or the priest was kind enough to ignore his clueless-ness. I couldn't believe he didn't know that he wasn't supposed to go!
  • I had a full Mass Catholic wedding and it was 45 minutes. I intentionally picked shorter verses and songs to keep it short and simple.

I am the only Catholic in my family but all of DH's family is Catholic so it made it interesting at communion time since no one from my side came up and certain other little things made for some giggle moments. (the 'Our Father' prayer stops 'short' of when protestants' version so some on my side kept going)

Even though I had a very nice and detail handout for everyone it was obvious some didn't follow along with it.

  • We had a similiar situation since all of DH's family is catholic and my family is Presbyterian.  We had a Presbyterian service with a ton of music, since DH and I met singing.  I'll never forget the first hymn.  Apparently catholics are used to singing hymns or signing very loud, because my half of the church was signing away and DH's side just looked over like they were crazy for singing so loud.  It was pretty funny!
  • I'm Catholic and have been to about a million catholic weddings. All are about an hour and I have never been to one that is two hours, thats insanely long!

I would expect an hour with communion, 40 minutes without

  • it all depends on if they have a full mass with communion or not. Most catholic churches in this area only do the full mass if both the bride and groom are catholic since the one that isnt' catholic woudln't be able to receieve communion. I'd say about 1 hr if there is communion and closer to 40 min or so without communion.

    ditto this

DH and I are both Catholic, we had communion at ours and it was an hour long mass. They generally are 40-45 minutes without communion

yes! they had to crawl over me....what i didn't know is that you weren't allowed to talk in the sanctuary....as soon as we got in there i saw someone i knew and of course "hey! how are you"...and everyone looked at me and the priest came over and lectured me on how we don't talk out loud in the sanctuary....so embarrassed!!!
