Have you refinished hardwood floors? (DIY or paid someone?)

The hardwoods in the entry/half-bath/kitchen of the new house need to be refinished, and we're debating doing it ourselves. If you've done it yourself, was it worth it? If you paid someone, what did it cost? (and would you recommend that person/company?)

I don't think we need the stress of this project on top of the whole buying process + DH's new job....but I'd like to save the $$ if we can.

Re: Have you refinished hardwood floors? (DIY or paid someone?)

  • Unless you have experience with a sander, it's easier to pay someone else.  It is very easy to go overboard and get a dip in your floors.  I've done it once, and that was enough for me.  Sometimes, it's just worth it to pay someone else.
  • We had ours done when we moved in to this house and since almost our entire house is hardwood we paid someone due to time. I am so glad we did. We have a small house so only about 1000 sq feet was refinished and it cost I believe 1200-1500. They sanded, stained, put 3 coats of finish on there as well as replacing all of the toe strip and thresholds. I think it looks amazing! I will tell you that most of the people you will find are self employed so cash can get you a discount. We got a quote and then asked him how much if we paid cash and he took off 10%. may be worth it to ask if you are able to pay cash.

I do recommend the company we used, but I will have to ask DH who it was. He handled them, so I don't remember the name.

If your DH remember who it was, I'd love to talk to them--that's a lot less than I thought we'd be paying (I'm guessing there's 700-800 square feet total) .

  • I know I'm late on this, but we recently redid our hardwood floor in the master bedroom.  We rented a drum sander from Home Depot and did it ourselves.  Honestly, it wasn't that bad.  My husband did the drum sanding, then we cleaned the debris, picked out a stain & "painted" the floorboards until we got it the color we wanted, then put a poly coat down (depending on how often you use the floor will determine how thick you want this).  It only took a few days to get it done and we are really happy w/ the results.  GL!

Thanks for the input! We're at least going to get estimates from the pros at this point and see what they say... since this project will involve the front entry (high-visibility), bathroom (working around plumbing) and the kitchen (lots of angles), it might be worth paying someone...we'll see what they say next week!
