Travel Agent Recs?

Anyone have any recommendations on Travel Agents? DH and I are planning a trip to Hawaii in October. I am wondering if there are any good TAs out here, or if I should just do it myself and go through one of the online sites.

Can you recommend a good online site? haha Thanks

Re: Travel Agent Recs?

  • Honestly, I've never used at TA before b/c I don't understand what the benefit is....not to say that there isn't one, I just don't know what it would be.

I rely heavily on Trip Advisor to make my initial hotel selection.  Then I go to individual airline websites to price out airline tickets...then I go through Orbitz, Travelocity, Kayak, Bing to see if I can get a better deal either separately or on a package.  Sometimes I do it backwards and look at Orbitz first, find a good deal, THEN go to trip advisor to get reviews.  I've only ever used Orbitz...usually the prices work out to the same amount and I'm just comfortable with them.

But I'm also obsessed with planning vacations and love spending hours and hours doing this.

Orbitz was pretty good when I cancelled our Mexico trip earlier this year...they only charged me $25 to cancel, but prob b/c the hotel allowed me to cancel.  That $25 was just the Orbitz fee.  Of course, the airline fee was a lot higher ($150 each ticket).

Belize was easy to plan on our own, even though we were delayed so much that we were 20 hrs late and missed out on a night.  A friend of ours (who lives on our street  Smile ) swears that if I'd used a TA they'd have been able to get us a reimbursement for the missed night and for the hotel we paid for in Houston.  Not sure if that's true, but you can also purchase trip insurance for stuff like that.  Even after going through that, I won't use a TA or buy insurance...in all my years of traveling I've never experienced that before.

So, to make a long post longer, if you're going to Kauai let me know...we did our HM there and I have lots of info.

Damn you Nest for screwing up my siggy!

The only time I used a travel agent was for my honeymoon with my ex, and it was a friend of ours who did it as a gift....I am actually glad I did that b/c it was international and we had a last minute change due to hurricanes.

But overall I have used TripAdvisor a TON and had great experiences with Expedia and Orbitz. If you are staying in the country, I would totally go your own route. I actually love Kayak.com too, it's one of my new obsessions.

     HTH!

Travel agents are great if you have a complicated schedule, international schedule or going someplace that tripadvisor has nothing about. Or if you have a large group.  Or if you don't enjoy planning or don't have time. The nice thing about travel agents is that they are supposed to plan things. SO if something goes wrong you have somone to yell at and to work on a solution for you.

But we've never used a travel agent. Between Lonely Planet, trip advisor, Frommers, tourism sites you can find out all about an area.  Especially when it's domestic or a popular American tourist area.
