name changing time...what do I need?

Finally going to SS office friday. What do I need to bring with me? ID, marriage license, but do I need birth certificates??

Also can I pre fill out any paperwork to make it go faster?

Does it cost anything?

Re: name changing time...what do I need?

  • In PA I needed my new License that reflected my new last name, marriage license and form. No birth certificate and if you go to the social security website there should be a form on there and it does not cost.

  • Here's the link for the form you will need.  http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/ssa.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=315

You need your marriage certificate and ID and it shouldn't cost you anything.

  • I'm in AL and all I needed was my marriage cert and my old driver's license.  To get my new driver's license, once again, all I needed was my marriage certificate, but all of the states are different so definitely check with your local social security office!  Oh, and it was free at the SS office.

  • I'm in PA, too, and I did the SS change first. I took in my driver's license and the CERTIFIED copy of the marriage license (you get the certified copy from the courthouse and usually have to order it ahead of time-- like over the phone earlier that day-- and pay cash). I didn't fill anything out ahead of time; I just answered the guy's questions when I was called up to the counter.

The DMV needed to see my old driver's license, the certified copy of the license, and the letter from the SSA indicating that the change had been made in their system.

  • In WV I had to have my old drivers license and certified copy of our marriage license. Here you can't get your new drivers license until your name with ss.

  • Thanks ladies. I prefilled out the paper-- thanks mhoneybee! I will be taking my old DL, certified copy of marriage license, and the paper. Wish me luck ladies.

Not sure if going on a friday is the worst idea I've ever had, but I have every friday off, so I can't justify taking another day off to do it!

  • All I needed was my ID and marriage license. As I recall, it didn't cost anything. It did cost me to get my new driver's license, though. For my DL, I needed my marriage license, a copy of my SS card (I just brought my old one and a copy of the letter the lady at the SS office gave me), and $11. That's Texas, though. I imagine it's similar every where else. :)

$23.50 in Alabama for a new driver's license.... Alabama sucks!!
