North Korea

Did anyone see the one guy crying during their anthem? I have two thoughts: 1)He is just so proud to be there he is overwhelmed with happiness or 2)He knows if he loses it'll be his last soccer match ever.

Re: North Korea

  • I shouldn't have laughed at this.  But I did.
  • I think he was just proud to be there.

  • He was so emotional!!

Can you enlighten me as to why North Korea is being allowed to play? (obviously not the players faults that they live under the rule of an insane dictator...)  I guess the WC is truly apolitical?  I'm not sure that the NK team would have been allowed into the host country if the WC was being played in the U.S. or Europe... ??  They actually had Brazil somewhat on the defensive yesterday in the last 10 minutes!

Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
  • North Korea participated in the Vancouver Olympics.

    Because they qualified?

Countries have boycotted events in host countries for political reasons, but I'm not aware of any country not being "allowed" to participate in the WC or Olympics if they qualified and can afford to send a team.

Like the PP pointed out, they participated in the Vancouver Olympics.

  • I totally turned to DH at that moment and said, "I bet he's afraid he'll be executed if they lose. Poor fella."

South Africa was not allowed to participate while they were under apartheid. This is an older article, but it gives a good background.

I also believe they were not allowed at the Olympics, but I am not sure about that one.

I'm confident that I asked a legitimate and smart question and I'm becoming reasonably confident that no one likes a Know-It-All with an attitude problem.  Or at least, after reading less than 10 posts from you, that I don't.

    So, thanks.

FWIW, I think it was a legitimate question.
