Vacations!

SO and I are looking into taking a vacation, but definitely on a budget.

Where have you been, what do you rec? I'm thinking more of either the southwest part of the U.S. or Mexico....but would love to hear about anywhere! Also, if it's not too personal, how much did you spend on the entire trip? TIA

What is your current budget?  Nothing over $1000, $2000?  How long of a vacation are you looking to take?

We've been looking into a resort called Catalonia Royal Tulum in Mexico.  Current pricing for 2 including air, all meals/beverages and taxes is $2000.

What we'll probably end up doing is spending a few days in Traverse City and then maybe spending a few days at the beach and trying restaurants in West Michigan we haven't been to or whipping up some fancy meals at home.  I don't plan on spending more than $1000 for the whole week including TC.  Kinda boring actually.  Haha.

  • Last year we split a week between Sedona, AZ and Las Vegas.  That was a lot of fun.  We rented a convertible for the week and it was amazing.  Most of our money was spent on really expensive dinners in Vegas.  We got both hotels through time shares, so that didn't cost us anything out of pocket.  The car rental was just under $300.  I would guess that we spent under $2000.

I think AIs in Mexico give you really great bang for your buck.  Check out Apple Vacations for the some really good deals.

Where was your honeymoon at again? I remember you said you really loved it.

We went to Aventura Spa Palace.  Current pricing is $2500 for only 4 nights.  It was a great vacation, but not very wallet friendly if you're looking to stay on a budget.   We paid close to $3k for our honeymoon (this included everything, air, meals/beverages, entertainment, travel insurance).

  • DH and I went to Puerto Vallarta Mexico on our Honeymoon and stayed at Dreams Resort (all inclusive) for 8 days. Total cost for everything was $3000. The trip could have been cheaper, but we chose to go over a holiday, when prices were up. We used a travel agent and had them price match an Apple vacation.

I've also been all around Costa Rica and loved it! I was there studying abroad, and traveled around most weekends, so I don't have a price, but it can be done cheap depending on where you stay, how you get a round etc. We stayed in hostels, took public transportation, etc and all of our trips were extremely cheap (and definitely adventurous). DH and I have considered going back and traveling like this for the first few days and then staying somewhere nice and relaxing for the last few days.

I would recommend either of these places! Good luck w/ your planning.

  • I've also used Apple Vacations before and had great luck with them arranging everything I wanted them too. I went to the Bahia Principe Tulum in the Riveria Maya and had an excellent time. Stayed 5 nights, went snorkeling in the ocean and more (tour booked through hotel), went to Isla Mueretes (sp?) and a turtle sanctuary on the the island (booked through hotel), and also went to Senor Frogs. Ate at the hotel a LOT (3 or4 resturants, only time I've ever tried a lemon soup!) and total cost for 2 people was $1500. I think we got a great deal on airfare at the time, but I've seen airfare to Cancun for like $200 a person through airfarewatchdog.com in the last few months.

Have fun! I'm off to Maui in September myself for my honeymoon.

LOL this sounds like our kind of vacation :) Since H travels for work, we like to keep it simple when he has time off!

We're the complete opposite.  We rarely travel, and only take one vacation every few years (we don't even go away for weekends), so we like to really get away when we do.  Plus our idea of a vacation is to be totally disconnected on a beach with someone bringing you drinks.  When we have kids though, this may change.
