Craigslist

Has anyone every bought anything off of craigslist?  I look around every once in a while but not much.  I would really like to get a 2 drawer filing cabinet.  I found one on CL but I'm so nervous to call the guy.  I definitely wouldn't go meet him alone but you hear so many stories.

If I go meet him and decide it isn't in good enough condition or just don't like it what do I say?  It's only $10 but I feel bad telling people no or that I don't like their stuff.  Advice please?

P.S. I know I'm a sissy

Re: Craigslist

  • You don't have to say you don't like something and you can be completely honest doing so. Repeat the following mantra:

"It's not what I'm looking for. Thank you for your time."

  • We just bought a teak patio set off C, in fact. We had a great experience!  I emailed several listings and asked for photos.  Once I saw picture, if I liked it enough, we set up a time to go and see the items.  We saw 2 that we didn't like and a third that we eneded up taking home.

My first suggestion is to go with someone, if you go in person to see items.  Second is to be honest.  Hopefully if you see pics, you'll be able to tell right away and not waste your time to even go see in person.  But, if you do go, you can always say it's not actually what you're looking for (like PP said).

  • Thanks for the tips.

Where do you typically meet people?  Like Target's parking lot? Or his home?  It's a 2 drawer filing cabinet.  So it's not huge but it would be pain to tote around.  He lives in Westwood which isn't the best of areas but could be worse.

  • We mostly sell on CL, but have purchased a few things.  DH and my dad have both gone to someone's house, but when my sister has bought stuff she meets them in a parking lot.

We sold several pieces of furniture last year before we moved so obviously the people came to our house.  I always make sure there is someone there with me when the person comes over.

Just be honest to them.  If it isn't what you were wanting just say that.  I have had several people come look at furniture and say they have other pieces to look at or it isn't what they were looking for.  No big deal.

  • It depends- I checked out a bike once and DH and I met the guy at a local Walgreens.  When we were searching for patio sets we went to their homes.  If the seller does not have the means to transport, if might be up to you to go to them and be responsible for removal.  If they ask you, you could always suggest meeting elsewhere.  IMO, Westwood is fine, especially during the day.

Every seller I've worked with has been very nice, not sketchy.  Just good ol' Cincinnatians looking to make treasure for someone else out of their trash :)

  • Thanks!

I was robbed at gun point a few years ago and now I'm a bif scardy cat and don't trust anyone.  I'm scared evening in the nicest parts of town. :)
