Housewarming plus bday party? Am I nuts?

I'm sure that I've officially lost my mind -- Ryan's birthday party in St Louis next weekend with Neil's family, then we get home Sunday from that and the movers come on Monday as we have to be out of the house on the first. Then, Friday, we leave for Michigan for 10 days for vacation and then Ryan's party with my family.

We have talked about having a bbq/housewarming/a one year plus one month plus one day party for Ryan on the 24th, in our new house with OUR friends here in town -- does that sound crazy? We are wanting to do a small bbq, inviting probably 20 people -- our friends keep asking if we are doing anything here for Ry's party, but we just don't have the time right around his birthday, so we thought we could combine his belated birthday party with a grilling out party for our friends...

Opinions?

  • I think if you want to have something low-key, it would be okay.  Would you feel comfortable asking guests to bring sides and desserts if you provide the meat to grill?  That would certainly make it easier on you.
  • I think that sounds like fun if you want to take it on in such a crazy time.  You can do burgers/dogs and a variety of salads for not too much money.

  • I think I would be tempted to give it a few weeks for a housewarming party. Maybe for Ryan's b-day you could meet up somewhere like a park and have it be a BYOP (picnic). Just explain to people between moving and trips to family, you really can't do a party right now.

Or otherwise like Suze said, ask for help with the sides.

  • I should clarify...the party will be JULY 24, not June 24

  • I actually saw that on the other board. I think July is much more doable than June.  I don't think that would be too bad. If you wanted to keep it simple, you could always do like an "ice cream social"  or desserts some evening. However I'm guessing you probably have a fun group of friends that you would like to hang out with for a while.  Big Smile  You still could do a simple BBQ.

  • I think you'd be fine.  It would be busy, but if you do something semi-low key there won't be much preperation.  And it will be added incentive to make sure everything is out of boxes and put away :)  We are having our housewarming on the 14th the day before Sam's baptism.
