Hi nesties,
I'm new to thenest, used to post a bit on theknot, but I thought my problem might be better to post on this board.
My husband and I used H&R Block at Home software to do our taxes this year, and we got back about 4k. We though the amount was high, but stupidly trusted H &R Block when they said it was because we had both been students with student loans. Well we got a letter yesterday from H&R letting us know that there had been an error with the software with how it calculated education credits, and we may have gotten a credit we should not have and may owe the IRS money. We called today and the first available time to speak with a representative about this was July 14. So now we have to wait almost a month before we can find out just what we might owe. We got the refund back in February, and immediately used all of it to pay off some debt. So right now we don't have any of the money we got back, and if we owe, we'll have to pay out of our very tiny savings account.
Anyone here have this happen? Or know anything about this? I'm freaking out that we may owe a lot of money, and we're already living pretty sparsely while my husband goes back to school. I don't know that I can go a month worrying about this. If we do owe, I'd rather know about it now so we can start figuring out how to pay it.
And can I just vent about the crappy timing of this? We just had to bring two of our cats to the vet for separate reasons, and my husband has been sick and had to make multiple visits to the doctor without insurance. This is really the last thing we needed right now.
Re: Issue with H&R Block online?
::waves hi::
Did you call H&R Block or the IRS? If you haven't already, I'd call the IRS directly (1-800-829-1040), they should tell you if you owe anything else. They have great customer service, just be prepared to be on hold for awhile. If you filed way back in Feb., I'd think that you'd have already heard from them if you owed, though I could be wrong (we had an error on our return, and we heard back from the IRS about 2 weeks after we filed). Hope you get good news!!
Hey Christy! Wow small world.
We did call H&R Block, and all they would do is make an appt to speak with someone on the phone, they wouldn't actually discuss it with us. I'm surprised you heard back so quickly from the IRS, I thought it would take them longer than that to go through everything. But that gives me some hope that maybe we won't have an issue. We're going to try them one more time and see if they'll see us sooner if we make an in-person appt. Thanks for the suggestion though, we'll have to try that if H&R Block remains unhelpful.
And uhh I certainly wasn't on the nest while at work yesterday...
