$%^& :( Dad lost his job

ARGH. He's been there 22 years. I don't know the "rationale" yet but he's been on the chopping block for a few months. He makes too much $$$ (he's at the top of his job spectrum) in a time when departments are trying to tighten up the budget and he was just an easy target to be let go. This is a "hire at will/fire at will" state so there's really nothing for him to contest.

He's getting 48 weeks of income but he's not sure if he can find something else that makes similar $$$ out there. My mom is of NO help or support too. She just keeps saying they'll be "living under a bridge" in a year. OY.

total cluster$%^ today. Ick!

Re: $%^& :( Dad lost his job

  • That is absolute BS. I am so sorry. And I'm sorry your Mom can't get her act together to help support and encourage your Dad, who I'm sure is just devastated. 22 years is a very long time.
  • I'm so sorry! That's awful, both about your dad and your mom's reaction.

He should definately file for Unemployment... it will at least help.

I'm sure that he'll be able to find something.

T&P for him and your family.

  • I'm really sorry! The same thing happened to my dad after 30 years with a company a few years ago. He found a job, but he isn't making the same money. At the same time, they are living in a different state now and are happier to be near close family, so there were trade offs.

Thanks, I am too - my mom's "worry" is just that he'll never make the same high amoutn again. I told her "them's the times" and it just is what this economy is! She cannot fathom them making less. She never plans, never has abudget, just spend-spend-spend. I wish she could learn to be a bette rperson and help him now like he has ALWAYS supported her.

Its so sad to learn you can be more of an adult than your parent. No

Sadly, I understand this statement all too well. Perhaps encourage her to go on a cash-only basis with a specific amount a week and then after that there's no more spending.

Sadly, I have one family member with 0 income and they still spend... and then they talk about all these different ways to Sunday to spend spend spend. It about kills me that short of taking care (as a parent cares for a child) of them there's nothing I can do.

  • Oh no.... I'm so sorry. At least he is getting nearly a year's salary. I'm sure that will be a huge help. I'm also sorry your mom is clueless about money. Perhaps during his time of job searching, he could take over managing the money?

How close is he to retirement? FIL lost his job in a similar way last year and opted to retire early instead of looking for more work.

  • I'm sorry! We had three people laid off yesterday, all of which had been with the company for a long time, it sucks!

  • the prob with retirement is my mom's theory about it: A lot of people work well past retirment age.

I F$#* with you, not. Tongue Tied

His 401k has been pillaged many a time over the years.

ANYWHO. I just spoke to him. He is SO relieved. He was done with being jerked around, & he has a year's worth of pay and 3mo of "head hunter" help pre-paid. So Dad is good with this. The trainwreck that is my mother is another story.

    :::siiiiiiiigh:::

So yay for Dad's positive outlook, right??

  • Yay for Dad's good attitude!
  • yep, it's definately great for your dad's outlook.

GL with working on your mom.

  • My Dad lost his job a few years ago it took him a while to find something but he did and is much happier. He and my mom work for the same company and get to eat lunch together. Your Dad sounds like he has a good outlook on everything.

  • that sucks! i'm sorry. but at least your dad has a positive attitude
  • I am so so sorry. I keep hearing how men in your fathers position were/are the most vulnerable in this economy. Companies are using any excuse to get rid of the long time employees, who make more, in order to put in someone younger who will do the job for less money.

Is it possible for your paents to downsize? It sounds as if your Mom needs a Dave Ramsey course.

    Good luck to your parents.

completely. Is mom willing to do it? That is the argument to have. MrBAMF and I figured out this holy grail of finances 18 mo ago and we're @ the half-way point but with them I don't know if they will see the light.

You either spend less or you earn more. Confused groundbreaking, I know.

    Thanks girls.

  • So sorry to hear, the same thing happened to my Dad just a month after my wedding last year. Except he had little to no severance. It's such a hard position to be in when as a daughter to hear this type of thing. I know what you are going through, the best thing is just to be supportive of your father and let him know you are there, emotionally.
