Which membership to get?

If you could choose one local place for which to buy an annual membership, what would you recommend?  FMG?  John Ball Zoo?  Children's Museum?

DS is a curious walking toddler, if that makes a difference.  I've yet to go to FMG, so I have no idea if they have things that Ben would like either.

Opinions?

Re: Which membership to get?

  • The museum. There's a lot for him to do and you could do it year round. I wouldn't want to do the zoo in January :)
  • For me, I would pick FMG.  For you, I agree with pp about the museum.  I haven't been there, but I would guess there are more year-round, kid-friendly things to do there.  FMG has some neat stuff inside, but I think the inside is more adult-focused (art, etc).
  • FMG All the WAY!

    Jan - Slow

Feb - butterflies come in mid-Feb, you can see them before they get to busy

March - April - Butterflies. They have a special members party

May - Oct - Children's Garden.  My kids love this. Plus we take long walks through the gardens.

Nov - Dec - Christmas Around the World - They have a special members party too.  And they have a train exhibit, which I'm guessing Mr. Ben will love by next year.

  • We have all 3.  If anyone needs gift ideas for Ben's next giftable event, suggest memberships.  That's how we went.

We've used the FMG one the most.  GVSU's reasoning is good, but she left out the fact that it's somewhere you can walk around in a t-shirt in the middle of winter.  And you get in free to the local music concerts on August Tuesday evenings.

The Children's museum is wonderful, we were just there today.  But it's more of a once a month trip for us.

The zoo is fun too.  They were closed last winter.  Unfortunate as it was one of the best times to go.  No crowds, active animals...

Something to look at is how the hours of your new job will allow you to visit these places on your 3rd shift schedule.  Some places have extended hours once or twice a week.  Also, compare the cost and availablility of membership levels of you only, vs. you and your husband (Ben should be free, I think).

  • I plan on getting a FMG membership when the time comes.  My brother and SIL have one for their family, and my nephews seem to really like it (they will be 4 and 1 y.o. in July).
