Birth Control recs please and thoughts on Mirena

We recently had our 2nd (and probably last) child.  She is 4 months old and I am currently breastfeeding.  Can you please recommend your birth control?  I'm irregular, so natural family planning is out.  Also, I really don't want to take a pill or use condoms.  My doctor is suggesting Mirena...can anyone give me their thoughts on that?

Re: Birth Control recs please and thoughts on Mirena

  • I use the NuvaRing and I love it. I could never remember to take the pill at the same time everyday. I don't know anything about Mirena to give recs.

  • There are umpteen, yes umpteen is a real number, posts relating to this exact question. I say do some research and look back at all the other posts asking about Mirena, Nuvaring and other non pill BC options. Save yourslef the waiting and us the time of re-posting previous req's.

  • I have a copper IUD, and I love it.  It is a no-brainer, no worries, and the copper one has no hormones.  I really didn't want the hormones.  It was expensive, but other insurance might pay for more of it than mine.  I think I paid $500, but in the long run that is cheaper than a year of BCP, and I'll have it in for at least 3 or so more years.
  • I LOVE my Implanon..its a progesterone-only implant that goes in your arm..its good for 3 years and I have not had 1 period since I got it.  Since its progesterone only, you can have it while you breastfeed!!

  • I had my Mirena inserted when my baby ws 6 weeks old. I was breastfeeding at the time and it was fine. For about 2 weeks after it was inserted I had some spotting, and every now and then I get cramps but my period has just about disappeared!

  • I have had the Mirena for 3 years and CAN NOT WAIT to have it removed. I haven't had a period since it was inserted, but that is not as good as it sounds. No periods means your hormones get all out of whack. I'm irritable all the time, I have random hairs sprouting where no hairs should be, I retain tons of fluids, making it harder to loose weight, etc.

I am having it removed in July and am counting down the days. Please don't let the possibility of no periods sway you...it isn't worth it.

  • I had the Mirena for about 2 years before TTC. I loved it! Putting it in HURT! I cramped off and on that day but after that, I had no issues!

  • Just wanted to inform you of an alternative to bcp, the Nuva-Ring. I'm on it and had switched after taking the pills for years and love it. I had the same problem where I was getting spotting in between periods and was frustrated. Nuva Ring is a small ring that you insert vaginally once a month. It's great because you don't have to remember to take a pill every day (and remember you must take the pill at the same time each day to be effective - it only lasts 24 hours). It's also preferable because it's a low hormone option, and it is not affect by foods or antibiotics.  Some foods have enzymes that reduce the efficacy of the pill (such as grapefruit), and antibiotics make the pill completely ineffective.  With Nuva-Ring, you don't have to worry about these issues.

Many women are squeamish about inserting something vaginally, but I assure you that it's like a tampon in that you (and your partner) cannot feel it if it's in correctly.

I would recommend trying that prior to Mirena since Mirena requires that you keep it in for a minimum of 5 years, which is a pretty big commitment. If you don't like Nuva Ring after a year or so, then I would suggest considering an IUD.

  • I have had mirena since a few months before my wedding in Jan. after several years of taking the pill. I am seriously considering having it removed. Like others, I have issues with not having a period. Is sounds great, but I have found myself missing those few days to feel ill and eat chocolate every month. Also, it has killed my sex drive. Not only do the hormones make me almost repulsed at the thought of sex, I also can't get over the fact that I have a plastic instrument inside me. One of the main reasons I have yet to have it removed is because the insertion was so painful. I've been told that getting it out isn't as bad but I'm still not jumping at the chance at another bad gyno visit. If you're not interested in the pill, consider Nuva Ring. If I ever use hormonal BC again, that is what I am going to try.

  • I have never posted on this board but I was peeking around and saw your post...

I had my mirena removed on Friday because it have moved from my utterance to my cervix and has been causing me pain for three months before they figured out why. Also 2 other friends who had them put in around the same time I did 1.5 yr ago both had to have it removed due to infections caused by it. Look into all your options before making the decision...

  • I had my mirena in for about a year and a half and have never had a child - just got it out because we are TTC.  Yes the insertion sucks, but if you have ever had really bad cramps it is just the same.   I didn't have any problems with it, a little spotting here and there but then no period for over a year.  It has very low hormones - I was on the pill for years and my doctor wanted me off since my mom passed away from breast cancer.  I have a couple other friends who have it and love it too.  I highly recommend it.

  • Not sure where you are coming up with Mirena having to be kept in for a minimum of 5 years.  It is a 5 year max.
  • Yeah- as I was researching the Mirena before I had it, it seems people love it or hate it. It is not for everyone, but I liked not having periods and I found the side effects to be lighter than with the Pill (a few varieties) or the Patch. I have never found a hormonal BC that didn't reduce my sex drive. But, the Mirena didn't reduce it as badly for me. Like a pp said, it is 5 years max, not min. But, it is still a bigger commitment since it requires insertion and removal require Dr visits.

  • You are right. People either love it or hate it.  I've had absolutely NO problems with mine so when someone tells me about all (if any) problems that they've had and how they can't wait to take it it out, i'm almost in disbelief!.... Inserting was painful.. But no periods ever is awesome!
