Hydrangeas - is this a pH thing?

Last year, two bushes side by side were the identical shade of pale blue. This year, one is blooming like crazy in a DARK blue, and the other has barely started, but the blooms are deep purple. The only thing that has changed is the surrounding plantings, but they have relatively similar plants on either side of them, so I can't imagine what else could have caused the color shift. Any thoughts? (Sorry, I can't figure out how to PIP without sharing an entire album!)

Re: Hydrangeas - is this a pH thing?

  • The color is impacted by the soil acidity. So by changing the companion plants, or adding new soil w/ the companion plantings could have impacted their color.

  • An easy thing to do is add coffee grounds to the soil to adjust the acidity level. Check out this article for further info:

  • I think they can change year to year without you necessarily doing anything. Mine bloomed lavender last year and are light blue this year with some lavender blooms on the top. I didn't change the soil. I didn't plant anything new.

  • It could be a pH thing.  Is one of them closer to a sidewalk?  My mom's hydrangea blooms pink on the side next to the sidewalk and blue on the other side.  (the concrete changes the pH).  It looks gorgeous though.
