Just curious . . . my cousins wife commented on my FB that her 3 1/2 year old son decided he is going to give Bebe his pacifiers because he is too old for them.
I had always thought that you were supposed to wean your child off pacifiers by the time they were 1 year old. Lately I have noticed more and more 3 to 4 year old children popping the pacifier.
What do you ladies think? At what age do you think a baby should stop using pacifiers? By 1 year? 2?
Bebe uses her pacifier now just for going to sleep . . . and only if she fusses for it. If I can help it I just don't offer it now. I do stash one in her crib though and if she wakes up early she just pops it in and goes back to sleep.
Re: How old is too old for pacifiers?
I agree w you, but I guess it depends on the baby.... AND the parent in this case.
Hm. 3-4 seems old for a pacifier, but I'm no expert.
Sometime between 12-18 months would be my ideal weaning time.
I had mine until I was 3. My mom bribed me to get rid of it with a giant Easter basket full of candy.
I think anything over 2 is really pushing it. Hunter, if he'd ever liked it, would have to ditch it before 1 though b/c the 1 year old room at his DCP doesn't allow pacis. Luckily he was not a fan of it ever - he chews on his Wubbanub but its more like a lovey.
1 year (which I believe is the upper recommendation for SIDS prevention if parents so choose to use a paci for that...)
We are hoping that Chiclet never wants/needs one...

I will not let Sadie use it much beyond 1...and like Bebe will only be for sleepy time. A friend of mine literally had the paci in her sons mouth ALL THE TIME! It was so yucky looking!
Sadie uses her's now if she is SUPER fussy and for going back to sleep, because most times she falls asleep at the boob.
But like other girls have said, a lot depends on the parent...some want the easy way out so they give a paci instead of trying to soothe another way. JMHO!
I didn't want to use it at all, but alas, it's a blessing sometimes.
He uses it for falling asleep, and when he has it during the day, he mostly plays with it, he likes the edges to sooth his gums. Hopefully we'll start facing it out in a couple of months.
I agree that anything past one year is a bad idea. Not just because of the dental work they may need, but because of the dependence it creates. I just don't think it's emotionally healthy
Myka decided at 3 months she was too old for it and if she is offered it gets an angry face and throws it at you.
However, if she still wanted to use it I would only offer it at sleepy time and only to age one.
The build a bear is a cute idea.
