Camera recs/opinions? SLR or P&S?

Malia's post from last week has me thinking.  I want a new camera before this baby is born & since I am getting it primarily for photos of little kids, I need it to take the pictures fast...no waiting for flashes..and to take action photos.

I probably won't do very much editting.  I might do a little red-eye or blemish erasing, but I haven't used Photoshop since college & knowing me, even if I have the software, I won't use it.

So what do you think?  Should I just get a really good point & shoot? or would the SLR be worth it (w/o editting software)?

I can't really speak for others, but I actually specifically got a DSLR for taking pictures of the baby. I got it during my 2nd tri (as a bday present from MH), got in some practice with it, and felt pretty comfortable with it by the time the baby was here. My DSLR also has HD video, and I wanted that mainly for capturing excellent quality videos of the baby as well. A secondary reason for my DSLR is for good macro food photography, which is something I love to do. Everyone values/looks for different things for the use of their camera, but I would say that mine was primarily for the baby. I *do* post-process my photos, but I feel like the quality of the DSLR pictures are much better even without the post-processing. If you haven't used Google's Picasa yet, it's actually a pretty good free photo editing tool that is fast and easy. GL in your decision!

  • I think it depends on whether or not you'll use any settings other than "auto" on the DSLR. I'm not being snarky (hell, I have a DSLR and use my auto setting about 80% of the time right now!), but it's just that if you don't think you'll use the manual settings, a DSLR basically becomes just a really expensive (and heavy lol) point and shoot anyway. Yeah you can get different lenses, which is awesome, but they're $$$ so you really need to think about how much you would use those as well.

There are some really good P&S cameras out there that are capable of both nice portraits and action shots and have good image quality, so if you think you're going to want to literally just point and shoot (not adjust settings, change lenses, etc.) then I think that's the way to go. Smile

  • thanks ladies.  I guess I need to do a little more research & figure out how much I want to spend!

  • Baseline DSLR is the NikonD40, which costs $499. This is what the photographer who took our last photo session has. And she got some great shots!

So it costs more than a P&S, but IMO, totally worth it. I can't tell you how many times I have had the camera out and pointed at Alexa and she does something ridiculously cute and by the time I slam the button down and it actually gets around to taking the picture, she's turned her head, shut her eyes, moved completely...

Babies are SO FAST. The shutter speed alone is reason enough. And if you learn to actually take good pics, then that is bonus. IMO. I want one. Deciding now how much I want to spend...... From the Nikon D40 on up to Lisa's freakin D90.?

If anyone has tips on how to get a camera for the BEST PRICE, pls let me know!!!
