questions for mommas

What brands of diapers have your tried?  What works for you?
Same with bottles?
What is something you couldn't live without when the baby was young?

TIA!

Re: questions for mommas

  • We use Luvs diapers and love them.  They are one of the cheapest on the market and we've never had a leak with them, even overnight.  We compared them to the price of the BJs generic brand and they are the same exact price.  Plus you can usually get some good coupons for them (at BJs they frequently mail out a $5 off coupon).

Also, we use Dr. Brown's bottles.  I have mixed feelings on them.  Andrew has never had any issues with gas or reflux after taking a bottle, but I'm not sure if that's because of the bottle or if he just didn't have any GI issues.  They are good in that they don't leak, which I've heard a lot of bottles do.  They issue I have with them is that they are a pain in the butt to clean.  Lots of pieces.  I can't complain too much because I still BF and Andrew doesn't get bottles often, but if he used bottles more often I may have considered switching bottles.

  • Diapers: We tried pampers, huggies and target's up and ups.

    Reviews of diapers:

Pampers: Luke was in Pampers most of his life. We used swaddlers and cruisers up until recently. The almost always fit him well and we didn't have much trouble w/ leaks. I stopped using them b/c of the dry max chemical burns that they are having problems with  now and w/ their refusal to address this problem.

Vivi was in swaddlers for the first 6 weeks or so. She had a bad skin reaction to them from the start that cleared up as soon as we switched.

Huggies: Luke was only in huggies for a short time when he was about 9-12 months old. They fit him better when he was extra chubby before he started walking.

Vivi has been in huggie pure and naturals since we switched from swaddlers. You will have to buy up a size as they seem to run a little small. There is no scent to them and I think they are dye free as well. They seem to be the only thing that is kind to Vivi's skin. We have no problems w/ leaks.

Target up&ups: Luke is in these now. I really like them! they hold well ,dont leak and are ssssoooooo cheap! They are less than $14 for a box as compared to nearly $20 for pampers and huggies depending on where you get them. I really wish I would have switched earlier. Vivi has borrowed a few from Luke and they are fine on her as well except that after 2 or 3 days her skin begins to get red, so back to huggies we go!

Luvs: I have never used them, but the little boy I babysat did and I really hated the wat they felt and smelled. That's just me, though. IMO, if you want to save money skip the luvs and go to up and ups.

    Bottles:

We have only used dr. browns for a short time w/ Luke. There have a million pieces, but work well.

Then the Medela bottles that connect to the pump w/ both kids for a few weeks. They are EASY and have more breast-like nipples than other bottles.

The kid I babysat used the playtex ventaire bottles. They were ok, but a pain when she premade the bottles and you couldn't really shake them up b/c the little plastic vent cover would sometimes move and make a mess.

     Things I could live w/o:

The boppy, zip up long sleved sleep and plays for baby, baby socks, my pump n style breastpump, recieving blankets, mesh baby bath sling...and thats about it...HTH!

  • ITA with Tiff on the zip-up PJs!  After using the zip-ups compared to the buttons, I wonder why all infant PJs don't have zippers.

  • I LOVED the swaddlers for Emmy. I am actually on the hunt for non dry max ones to use with #2. We use Pampers Baby Dry now and they are wonderful. No leaks and Emmy pees like a champ.

We use Dr Brown's bottles now but we started with the Playtex Drop ins. I loved the Drop ins but Emmy had gas issues. The Dr Browns are a pita to clean but we put everything but the nipples in the dishwasher and have had no problems.

Things I couldnt live without - swaddles, bottle warmer (we have 2 floors and it was a pita going down stairs to get bottles in the middle of the night), a cradle swing (Emmy hated the front to back swinging one), zip up pj's and either snap or pull over bibs (the ones with velcro get stuck all over everything and ruined some of Emmys outfits)

  • Diapers:

We use cloth & Up&Ups. I have also tried Huggies, Pampers, Parent's Choice (Wal-Mart), and Dollar General.

Cloth: I love the Kissaluvs fitteds with snaps. They are really soft and work really well. For the first week or two, we didn't even have to put a cover on theme.  I mostly use prefolds (Gerber from Target) with Thirsties covers. Work great. I will order more Kissaluvs with #2 though.

Pampers: L used the swaddlers for the first few weeks. I didn't want to mess up any cloth diapers with his newborn poo. I've heard it's a pain to clean out of cloth. We loved the Swaddlers. However, I'll be finding something else for #2 since the switch to Dry Max.

Huggies: We had a ton of leaks! Used one package my mom bought and never bought any more.

Up & Up: We love these! Super cheap (on sale right now for $12.99/box!) and hold a TON of pee. We very rarely have leaks, and when we do it is human error or L has managed to undo the side.

Parent's Choice: Don't waste your money on these! They didn't leak, but the pee always soaked up to the waist and got his pants wet around his waist. I'm not sure if they are shorter in the front or if it is just because L is long-waisted.

Dollar General: These are good in a pinch. Not as good as Up&Up, but a TON better than Parent's Choice and Huggies.

    Bottles:

Notes: L has had no problems with gas with any bottles we've used. We prefer glass bottles. They seem to get cleaner. Plastic bottles get a nasty film on the inside if they are washed by hand too many times before being run through the dishwasher. Never had that problem with glass bottles.

    Playtex Drop-Ins
When I was breastfeeding, I loved the Playtex Drop-Ins. So easy!

Playtex Ventaire and Ventaire Advanced (Wide base nipples)
Don't use these as much since I quit breastfeeding. The regular Ventaire worked fine for a while, but as the bottles got older they started leaking. I think the plastic vents get worn out and don't stay suctioned to the bottom as well. I haven't had any leak problems with the Ventaire Advanced until last week. I'm thinking it may be the same thing, the vents getting worn out. I'm sure i could buy replacements, but I prefer glass bottles anyway. Also, these were great when I was breastfeeding because of the wide base nipples. It made transitioning from breast to bottle and back easier, and didn't mess up L's latch the way using a smaller nipple did.

    Born Free (Glass)
Love these! We're buying more for #2. Only drawback is they are kind of heavy, so it was longer before L could hold them. He still won't/can't hold it very long.

    Evenflo Classic Glass
Love these! Cheap, not as heavy as the Born Free, fewer parts, and easy to clean.

    Things I can't live without:

    Dress-style sleepers.
Great for night-time diaper changes! No snaps or zippers! On a side note, I hated the zip-up sleepers before L was sleeping through the night. It always woke L up too much when I had to unzip the whole thing to change him because it made him cold. The snaps allowed me to only unsnap the bottom when I changed him.

    Glass bottles. See above. :-)

Cradle swing. However, L outgrew his cradle swing fairly early because of his length.  He loved it though.

Faded Glory (Wal-Mart brand) Socks They actually stay on, unlike most cutesy baby socks.
