Bread is my crack. Do not leave me home alone with a loaf of fresh french bread or hot, just-out-of-the-oven zucchini bread. Trust me, it's not pretty. So......
1) What's your favorite "everyday" sandwich bread? And what's your favorite "splurge" bread?
2) Do you typically serve bread as a side during most dinners or just when company comes?
3) Have you had an ultimate bread moment? Meaning after having said bread, you continue to search for a similar loaf or recipe?
4) What's your favorite bread to bake? Bonus points if you share the recipe!
Re: POLL: Bread
1) What's your favorite "everyday" sandwich bread? And what's your favorite "splurge" bread? Sourdough, all the way! Unfortunately, it's not an everyday kind of bread here. They sell it in rolls but not regular sliced bread for sandwiches (although it's not very "sour", for lack of a better word - more like lightly flavored white bread).
2) Do you typically serve bread as a side during most dinners or just when company comes? Just when company comes, and even then it depends on the meal. If we're having a roast or a stew or something, then we'll have bread, but otherwise not.
3) Have you had an ultimate bread moment? Meaning after having said bread, you continue to search for a similar loaf or recipe? YES. My mother had an amazing - and I mean amaaaaaaazing - onion bread recipe. I say "had" because it was lost during a move, along with some other recipe cards (I think the box got spilled or something?). My sister and I have been trying to recreate it for years - she's gotten close, but something is still missing.
4) What's your favorite bread to bake? Bonus points if you share the recipe! I'm not sure if this counts, but homemade soft pretzels (they're not widely sold here, so during one super strong craving I decided to try making them myself - and although it's a little messy, it's really easy!). Recipe is here.
I don't eat bread anymore because I can't have wheat, but back when I did...
1) What's your favorite "everyday" sandwich bread? And what's your favorite "splurge" bread? I think it was called Squirrely Bread. It didn't have flour and had grape juice in it rather than sugar. It was healthy but I thought it tasted really good.
2) Do you typically serve bread as a side during most dinners or just when company comes? DH tried to avoid wheat, too so we never have it if it's just us, only when company comes.
3) Have you had an ultimate bread moment? Meaning after having said bread, you continue to search for a similar loaf or recipe? Back when I ate wheat, I used to love Superstore's sourdough bread, it kind of looks like a turtle shell. I also used to love artisan-style breads, like Terra breads and Cobs
4) What's your favorite bread to bake? Bonus points if you share the recipe! I like this spelt bread recipe. It doesn't have yeast in it, but uses salt, baking soda and molasses. Non-wheat bread will never taste as good as wheat bread to me, but I like this dense, heavy bread. I'd love to try adding walnuts to it or something.
Oh, I miss wheat bread!!
Mmm. Bread.
1) What's your favorite "everyday" sandwich bread? And what's your favorite "splurge" bread? We usually use whole wheat pita - today I have a small white pita... but for splurging, something crusty and herby.
2) Do you typically serve bread as a side during most dinners or just when company comes? Only for company. Bread is rarely a side for us... if it's on the plate, it's part of the main event.
3) Have you had an ultimate bread moment? Meaning after having said bread, you continue to search for a similar loaf or recipe? We're talking about the platonic form of bread here, aren't we. I'd say it's probably my Nana's bread. She would make four loaves at a time, and the house always smelled of bread. She died more than 15 years ago, and I still keep trying to replicate that bread. It doesn't help that her recipe calls for "some" of this and "a good heapful" of that.
4) What's your favorite bread to bake? Bonus points if you share the recipe! I posted this in the Le Crueset thread, but I looove making the no knead bread from the NYTimes.

1) What's your favorite "everyday" sandwich bread? And what's your favorite "splurge" bread? The only bread I keep in the house anymore are sandwich thins. Otherwise I'll eat the whole loaf.
2) Do you typically serve bread as a side during most dinners or just when company comes? Never, which is funny considering that bread was a staple on the table growing up. The ONLY time is when we have spaghetti or lasagna and then only when company is with us.
3) Have you had an ultimate bread moment? Meaning after having said bread, you continue to search for a similar loaf or recipe? There is an amazing local business near me called "House of Bread" and they have the most amazing Squaw bread. I can't buy it anymore....I ate the entire loaf in 2 days.
4) What's your favorite bread to bake? Bonus points if you share the recipe! I don't bake bread......see reason above! No self-control!
1) What's your favorite "everyday" sandwich bread? And what's your favorite "splurge" bread? For my daughter and husband, I keep whole grain wheat for their sandwiches, toast, etc. For myself, I keep the 12-grain wheat that is half the calories (40 compared to 80). Not sure of the brand!
2) Do you typically serve bread as a side during most dinners or just when company comes? No, we don't serve bread with meals very often, even with company, Always with spaghetti or lasagna we'll have a garlic bread but that's about it. We all love it but have to cut it out of meals....too many calories!
3) Have you had an ultimate bread moment? Meaning after having said bread, you continue to search for a similar loaf or recipe? We have a Pioneer Co-op here that makes all kinds of amazing bread; jalepeno cheddar, black olive, etc. But the ultimate is cracked pepper pamesan with HUGE chunks of the cheese in it. To die for!!
4) What's your favorite bread to bake? Bonus points if you share the recipe! I have never attempted to make bread, not much of a baker. I've made several sweet breads (lemon poopyseed is a fav. with my daughter) but that's the extent of it!
1. Everyday sandwich bread is italian or a sweet wheat. Splurge - cinnamon swirl bread!
2. We don't do much bread w/ dinner, unless it's a pasta night, then we usually have garlic bread made from italian.
3. LOVE the bread at Outback - would love to be able to buy it, but haven't hunted it down.
4. sadly, I've never made my own!
ETA: totally forgot about Potato Bread! I love those rolls when I'm up in Central PA!
1) What's your favorite "everyday" sandwich bread? And what's your favorite "splurge" bread? It would whole or spinach tortilla... but for splurging, it would have to be a warm cheese croissant.
2) Do you typically serve bread as a side during most dinners or just when company comes? Not normally, but yesterday we did polish off a loaf of fresh garlic bread that I have been craving for weeks
3) Have you had an ultimate bread moment? Meaning after having said bread, you continue to search for a similar loaf or recipe? My MIL, imo, has the best homemade buns recipe, (nothing comes close) that we ALWAYS have for family gatherings. She has passed on to me since out of all the ladies in the family we are the only two bakers.
4) What's your favorite bread to bake? Bonus points if you share the recipe! Banana Bread all the way.
The Best Banana Cake Recipe (from my girlfriends food blog and my most favourite)
The great thing about overly ripe bananas is that you can use them as an excuse to mix up some banana cake (or bread - the term is often used interchangeably). By the way, I wouldn?t bother with a recipe which calls for anything less than 3 bananas - this ensures a dense and moist cake which truly tastes of banana. Eleanor (a family friend from Ottawa) passed this recipe onto my my mother, who passed it onto me, and it is to this day my ultimate banana cake recipe.
In a mixer beat together 1 cup sugar, 1 egg, 1/2 cup softened butter and 1/2 tsp salt. Add 2 tbs milk, 3 mashed bananas, 1 tsp baking powder, and 1 tsp baking soda. Add 1 1/2 cup flour gradually. Pour into a loaf pan and bake for 60 minutes at 180c
Then I have added my own little extra twist to the recipe, about 5-10 min before time is done, I sprinkle a bit of brown sugar and nutmeg on top.
Enjoy
Yum! I can't wait to try this one! I have yet to find a go-to banana bread recipe and this sounds like the one!
1) What's your favorite "everyday" sandwich bread? And what's your favorite "splurge" bread? I live off Orowheat Sandwich Thins. They make great sandwiches - and mini pizzas! Our splurge would be any kind of white bread, especially Hawaiian sweet bread.
2) Do you typically serve bread as a side during most dinners or just when company comes? We rarely have bread with dinner - only if we have guests or if MH is carbo-loading for a race.
3) Have you had an ultimate bread moment? Meaning after having said bread, you continue to search for a similar loaf or recipe? Yes! An old family friend makes the most soft, gooey bread. I don't know what the secret is - something about not using yeast? I've never had anything like it before.
4) What's your favorite bread to bake? Bonus points if you share the recipe! I like to make pumpkin bread, zucchini bread, banana bread.... anything along those lines.
Here's my go-to zucchini bread recipe:
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup all purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
3 tsp ground cinnamon
3 eggs
1/2 cup unsweetened apple sauce
1/2 cup light sour cream
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
3 tsp vanilla
3 cups grated zucchini (do not drain)
(1) Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Sprits two 8x4 loaf pans with Pam or grease with your method of choice.
(2) Sift flours, baking soda, baking powder, salt and cinnamon into a medium sized bowl.
(3) Beat eggs and sugar together in a second bowl. Then add apple sauce, sour cream, and vanilla and lightly beat. Beat in sifted ingredients, adding a 1/3 at a time.
(4) Manually stir in zucchini.
(5) Pour half of the batter into each greased loaf pan. Bake in preheated oven. Check bread after 45 minutes with a toothpick. If inserted toothpick comes out dry, the bread is done. My oven requires another 10 minutes so you may have to lengthen the baking time too.
1) What's your favorite "everyday" sandwich bread? And what's your favorite "splurge" bread?
Oroweat is my favorite "everyday" bread (except I rarely eat bread at home). My favorite "splurge" bread is "pineapple" taro bread (there's a sweet crust on the bread that is yellow and has a pineapple pattern on it--but it's not actually made from or flavored like pineapple--and it has a sweet taro paste filling in the middle) from the Asian bakery. I also love Le Boulanger's dutch crunch bread.
2) Do you typically serve bread as a side during most dinners or just when company comes?
Neither actually. I don't usually serve bread unless I'm serving sandwiches and the bread is a part of it...or if I'm serving bruschetta or spinach artichoke dip--then I serve it with toasted sourdough or french slices.
3) Have you had an ultimate bread moment? Meaning after having said bread, you continue to search for a similar loaf or recipe?
Nope, but I'd love to know how to make my favorite splurge breads at home
4) What's your favorite bread to bake? Bonus points if you share the recipe!
I haven't baked bread since high school. I used to make a cranberry bread in my parents' bread maker that my family loved. It's been a long time though and I don't know where the recipe is anymore...
I LOVE zucchini bread! Can't wait to try your recipe sometime
