Teachers

I know there are a bunch of teachers on here.  Care to share any secrets that work?

I'll share some:

I use a buddy clock that students fill out at the beginning of the year then when I want them to work with partners or groups I just say get with your ___ o'clock buddy.  It's nice because then they don't get stuck with the same joe smoe every time.  Plus it gives students the opportunity to pick who they want to work with and avoid people they don't get along with.

I use a timer for things.  This way I always make sure there's time for closure or clean up before the bell rings.

Re: Teachers

  • I just found the clock buddy template. I remember you talking about that when we met for lunch last time.

I do a Chat Sheet the first 2 weeks of the year. The students and I write little get to know you notes to each other to establish relationships. I will say that I work in a small school, and that is why that is manageable. I also spend most fo the 1st week of school doing team building stuff to set the tone of my class.

You don't just have to use the clock.  I would love to have a baseball template and say work with the right fielder today type of thing.  I just need someone to draw the template well.

I do a get to know you sheet at the beginning of the year and pass out birthday pencils once they have their birthday.  I do a lot of team building stuff the first few days, letting the kids know the rules of the classroom etc.

  • I don't necessarily use any tricks but I very into timeouts to chat during class. We talk about all sorts of things from favorite candy to pizza to stories about my DH. I get to know the kids really well and then they get a break during our 80 minute blocks.

  • im a little confused with the buddy clock....

What I am picturing is each student has a fake clockface on their desk, with a different persons name at each number....

So what if Joe has Sally for his 1:00 buddy

and sally has eric for her 1:00 buddy

and Eric has Judy for his 1:00 buddy

    Who is everyone paired with?

The kids go around and pick and discuss it with each other.  They only write down a name when they both agree to be each others 1:00 buddy.
