FIFA drop ref who blew US/Slovenia call

PRETORIA, South Africa ? Controversial referee Koman Coulibaly was left off FIFA?s list for the next batch of World Cup matches following the error that cost the United States a victory against Slovenia.Yahoo! Sports revealed on Friday that Coulibaly was ?highly unlikely? to take any further part in the tournament after being given a poor evaluation by assessors following his decision to disallow Maurice Edu?s 86th-minute goal. FIFA confirmed yesterday that Coulibaly will not play any part in Tuesday or Wednesday?s matches, which will include Team USA?s critical Group C finale against Algeria.Instead, as they step into the arena of Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday with their World Cup life at stake, the Americans will be officiated by a man who has just witnessed a combat far more brutal than any game in the tournament.Belgian referee Frank De Bleeckere will prepare himself for the occasion by watching a DVD of the movie ?Gladiator? before taking center stage in a game that decides the USA?s destiny ? with a victory guaranteed to put the Americans through to the last 16.FIFA deliberately assigned De Bleeckere, a highly experienced and respected referee, to this game in response to the storm of controversy that came after the United States? 2-2 draw with Slovenia. De Bleeckere has been in charge of big matches many times in the past, most notably a Champions League clash between Chelsea and Barcelona in 2006 which came a year after a pair of explosive matches between those teams.?I don?t look at reputation or anything that has gone before,? De Bleeckere said. ?I will watch the previous games of USA and Algeria to help me understand their tactics and work on my positioning. But I will watch ?Gladiator? first.?Referees at the tournament have come under heavy criticism after a series of bad calls compounded by a stubborn refusal to explain their actions publicly. On Monday, the FIFA Referee Committee tried to go on a charm offensive by inviting the media to an open day but totally defeated the object of the exercise by refusing to answer questions about specific decisions.Neither Coulibaly nor Stephane Lannoy ? the French referee who erred in sending off Brazil?s Kaka against the Ivory Coast on Sunday ? were present. Coulibaly?s assistant, Inacio Candido of Angola, was in attendance. When asked if the controversy following the Edu no-goal had affected Coulibaly, Candido replied: ?A referee is like a player. When they lose an opportunity to score a goal, they put it behind them.?

Re: FIFA drop ref who blew US/Slovenia call

  • Whoa. I wasn't expecting that.

I missed the game on Friday, but that's all anyone was talking about this weekend - and the red card for Kaka. What a World Cup it's been...

Yeah, Kaka's red card was ridiculous

I think Harry Kewell's red card was ridiculous as well.  It's like the ref completely ignored FIFA's rule book.

There have been quite a few sucky calls thus far.

  • Red card for Kaka...hand ball prior to goal.  The Brazilian match was all over the place.  I was sad to see the Ivory Coast lose that one and have such poor ref'ing to boot.

I was sad too until I saw that academy award worthy OH NO MY FACE that got Kaka sent off.  So unsportsmanlike!

I am glad that Coulibaly is out - watching those highlights Friday night made me want to kill kittens, UGH.  Amadou and Mariam would do a better job.

There have been quite a few manky calls this year.

THANK YOU ! I've been hearing since yesterday Kaka this and Kaka that (which yes I think he was acting like a brat but didnt deserve a red) and no one was focusing on the 2nd goal, not only did Fabiano touch the ball once with his hand but twice!! I was even more shocked when the ref asked him if he touched it with his arm then laughed it off when Fabiano said no.

I think a few of the refs have been all over the place this cup. Just from this weekend:

-Italys game against NZ the ref was doing everything in his power to help italy. They did not deserve a penalty kick.

    -US 3rd stolen goal

-Brazil lack of voiding hand goal and the Kaka red card.

-Chile vs Switzerland, I didn't get to watch the game yet but espn was commenting that the ref lost it handing out yellow cards (+1 red) like candy

According to FIFA rules, a red card is not the appropriate response for a handball.  It's the very very very last resort, refs are highly discouraged from sending someone off the pitch for it, and it's only for an extremely obviously intentional act.

But I thought Kaka was sent off for touching Toure who proceeded to roll around on the ground like he was an Italian.  Did FIFA come out and say it was for something else afterward?

I wasn't relating the red card to the hand ball....two different players.  They were two bad calls in the same game though.  That second goal should not have counted...and who knows how play would have been affected if it had stayed 1-0 at that time.  Fabiano knew he handled the ball yet when the ref asked him he clearly said no he hadn't...talk about unsportsmanlike.

OK, I was really confused about who this thread has been talking about.  I was editing as you were posting to clarify which call we were talking about.

  • This is not too surprising. It is too bad because the officiating started off really well. Hopefully it improves for the final round of games in the group stage.
