Parents, how do you do it? (re. shots and pets)

This really isn't about children but it made me think of how hard it must be as a parent to take your children in for their shots.  Today, I took my dog to the vet for an annual, shots, tests, etc.  He hasn't been in over a year Embarrassed but I wanted to get him back on track.  Mickey is super laid back and not aggressive AT ALL.  However, today at the vet they had to put a muzzle on him!  He was nervous after they took blood and a fecal sample.  Then, he got aggressive more aggressive and tried to bite the vet a couple of times.  I think he was just scared and uncomfortable.  It seemed like some of the things were hurting him which we've never encountered before.  The vet and her assistant weren't mad about it but I felt so bad.  As scared as he was, I couldn't help but think about his hard it will be to one day take a child to get vaccinations.  Props to you parents out there.  That's got to be one hard task.

Re: Parents, how do you do it? (re. shots and pets)

  • Dh and i were havingalmost this same conversation yesterday. We just moved and it sparked some iiiinsane seperation anxiety in my dog and it is breaking my heart. I sat outside the bedroom yesterday and cried my eyes out because I didn't know how to make him feel safe. I cannot imagine dealing with this for a child. Raising the dog is enough to brig me to tears. Props to themoms!!
  • I always step out of the room for my dogs vaccinations.  Sometimes they'll take him to the back and do it instead of in the exam room.  It's actually a little easier for me now than it used to be...

I can't imagine what it will be like when DD gets her first vaccines... in a month, eeeep!  Although, when she got her heel pricked and cried for the longest I've EVER heard her cry it wasn't too bad.  But I think humans are a little easier to comfort than pets.

  • Well babies tend not to try to bite the doctor Wink

The anticipation is actually worse than the shots,  especially if you have a good nurse,  I think my nurse gave 3 shots in under 10 seconds total.  And my baby has stopped crying within 30 seceonds each time.  Now when your baby gets blood taken,  that's a whole 'nother awful story

  • Our dogs don't mind the shots at all but when I took Dempsey in for a broken dew claw and they took him in the back to see if they could extract it without sedating him... I could hear the poor little guy screaming from three rooms away.  I could barely hold it together.  They couldn't even get it out and had to sedate him later that day.

I don't know how I'm going to get through it if our kids are in that much pain :(

  • i had an insulin dependent dog for 2 1/2 years, so shots don't bother me too much, but i bet it would be a different story if i had a child!  as it is now, i give everything but the rabies shot myself; you can buy pet shots at tractor supply.  our dog doesn't like to go to the vet, so i've had the wonderful experience of the growling, the nipping, and even spraying.  not fun.

  • So far I've found that shots with DS are easier than they are with my dog. I think DS is easier to comfort & understands a little better that his mom can make things better.
