San Antonio Nestie Here...

Hey girls!! I'm hitting up your board for some recommendations :)

Okay, so DH and will have our car paid off by the first week of September. This is a couple months away, but because we're having to give up A LOT during the summer to make this happen, we want to celebrate a little when we're done. Basically, we want to go eat somewhere amazing and stay at a really nice hotel. Austin has SO much that I get overwhelmed researching and plus, personal recs are always SO much better.

The restaurant I found is Jeffrey's of Austin and I want to know if it really is good or not? We're going to do the tasting menu and want to make sure it's worth the cost.

Also, what are some fantastic hotels in the area? When we go somewhere for a special occasion we like staying at different types of hotels (not massive chains)...

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!

 Thanks!!

Re: San Antonio Nestie Here...

  • Not sure about Jeffery's, but for hotels check out the San Jose or the Austin Motel. :o) Enjoy your stay!
  • Jeffrey's is great - it's been a few years since I've been, but I remember it being very good.

    Also check out the Driskill.

  • Ditto San Jose. It's awesome.

Jeffery's is okay. It went through a transition recently and maybe I was there when it was still transitioning, but I didn't love it. Some of my favorite nicer places here are: Restaurant Jezebel, III Forks (steaks), Austin Land and Cattle (also steaks), and Fonda San Miguel.

I've never been to Uchi, but I've heard a lot of people say it's awesome. And Foreign & Domestic Food & Drink has been getting a lot of raves lately. Also, never been to it.

  • Thank you all :) I appreciate the suggestions! I'll definitely look at some of those restaurants....
  • I've done two photo shoots and stayed the night once at Kimber Modern and highly recommend it. If you don't want to drive, its a short walk to South Congress, which has plenty of restaurants, but its more secluded than San Jose. If you really want to make a night of it, try Hotel St. Cecilia (more expensive than the other suggestions). Mansion at Judges Hill is also very nice for a more traditional, romantic night.
  • Good suggestions!  We're taking a mini-holiday to Austin next week actually so these restaurant recs will come in handy since I'm really only familiar with the old standbys.

I've heard great things about the restaurant Olivia as well... we'll be there for our anniversary so that might be our anniversary dinner...

  • For restaurants, we also really like Olivia on S. Lamar.  The tasting menu is fabulous!
  • For restaurants, Hudsons on the Bend.  It would be a drive from downtown, but it's awesome.  Eddie Vs is also really good, great seafood.

  • I second Restaurant Jezebel!!  Its upscale, really romantic, and fabulous food!  Perfect for a celebratory date night!

+1 one for Hudson's.  We tried out their three-course tasting menu a couple of months ago, and it was delicious.  It's one of my top five favorite celebration restaurants.

The last time I went to Jeffrey's, I wasn't impressed.

In town, I always recommend Wink.  I've also heard good things about Aquarelle and Olivia.

Wink was another one we were considering. Since Jeffrey's isn't getting too many great reviews we probably won't go there..Good thing we have a couple of months to decide!!
